What did you watch?

When I decided to watch fifteen shows from the Winter 2024 schedule, I went through the options and picked all the ones that instantly caught my eye. Then, I scanned the list again to fill in the missing spaces and consciously tried to grab a good selection of genres. I’m a firm believer in broadening your horizons. There’s a quote out there in the universe that suggests that if you want to write a specific genre then chances are you’re already read enough in that genre. Therefore, you can only become better by experiencing more and seeing what you can bring from all these different types of stories. Funnily enough, that’s a great thing to keep in mind as we dive into 7th Time Loop!

7th Time Loop Episode 1 Prince Arnold kills Rishe

What happened?

Rishe was about to be on the receiving end of a vicious attack from her fiance. He was going to break up with her in front of a packed room of their peers. Of course, she knew what was coming as she had experienced this moment six times before. After each one, her life took a different turn giving her a wide variety of experiences as she tried to make the most of each life. However, by the time she turned twenty, she was dead. Each time, it was the result of a vast war that would sweep the lands. This time, she was determined to stop that from happening. She had no idea how she would do that, but as she fled the palace and her fiance’s attempt to publicly shame her, she happened upon Prince Arnold Hein as she leapt from a second-storey balcony.

She landed with ease and then continued to make her getaway. However, her fiance had managed to catch up with her and was determined to continue. However, Prince Arnold stepped in and proposed to her himself. Despite being killed by Arnold personally in her most recent life, Rishe agreed and found herself being swept away to the Galkhein Kingdom where she would one day become Arnold’s wife. It was probably the one place she was least likely to be killed in the coming way, however, she was determined to stop it from ever coming to be and save countless lives. Luckily, she had six lives worth of experience to pull on, not to mention her intricate knowledge of the world around them and the things that would come to be. In each life, Prince Arnold’s actions have caused Rishe’s death, but will things be different this time?

What did you think?

I’ll put this out there first. I am not a fan of monarchies and inherited rule. To me, these ideas are absolutely abhorrent and have no place in a settled modern society. However, in fiction, things are very different. I loved this series. I had no idea that I would get swept away by Rishe as she used all of her experiences from six different lives to change the world. It is a little concerning that we might need to have six different lives to reach the heights that Rishe did, but it wasn’t like she had a long life each time. She just got to experience a different path each time. That’s why I think the idea of experiencing different things to get a better understanding of everything is such an important idea to attach to this series. This was a very clever and well-crafted story.

What was your favourite moment?

Going through the images that I captured for the series, I quickly realised that there were several great moments and they always involved Rishe. Many of the best ones often included Arnold as well as he looked on with a deadpan expression wondering what his future wife would get up to next. However, even knowing that she would invariably get into something, he never tried to stop her or stand in her way. At one point, she disguised herself as a boy to go into the knight training program. He caught her, but let her continue provided she was sure she could pull it off. Considering they had only just met, they quickly developed a great understanding of one another.

That leads me to my actual favourite moment. Arnold’s brother, Theo had kidnapped Rishe and locked her away. He desperately wanted his brother to recognise him and even claimed he wanted him to abdicate the throne. Anyhow, he had Arnold in a room and explained that Rishe was his prisoner. Arnold simply laughed and then looked to the door, waiting for her to walk in. Theo was shocked when she did just that. Not only had she escaped, defeated his men, and found their location, but she walked in and calmly told him everything he did wrong. I bet that amused Arnold to no end.

What was your least favourite moment?

I found the part with Michel’s backstory to be a little too contrived. Michel was the scientist and scholar who taught Rishe many things in one of her lives. However, they went their own ways because he was continuing to study a substance he called black powder (gunpowder). He believed that everything in life has a purpose and to deny it was going against science. So, when he discovered something as terrifying as black powder, he believed that he needed to find someone who would use it. That person was Arnold.

Anyhow, Michel’s mother died during childbirth and his father blamed Michel. However, he kept him around and then ended up bringing him into his line of work. Michel was doing experiments which ended up killing everyone else at the lab. He believed he was cursed. His father had told him that and his experiences had verified it. So in line with his beliefs, he was evil and he must create evil or he would be denying who he was. That’s a little heavy-handed if you ask me. The same effect could have been made without coming up with that outrageous tale.

Who was your favourite character?

It had to be Rishe. I loved how she understood people more than anything. A great example of this was when she selected the maids who would work at her estate. Because of her life where she was a maid, she knew a lot about the business and even cleaned up her estate herself before inviting the maids over to be selected. In doing so, she had also seen them all at work as she mingled with them. She made her choices which didn’t include the most experienced maid there. She was loud and brash, often belittling the others for simple mistakes. However, she was good at her job and couldn’t understand why she had been overlooked.

Rishe explained her process and what she had seen, leaving Diana stunned. However, it was what Rishe had uncovered that took her most by surprise. Rishe understood that Diana could read and write, unlike most of the maids who came from lower-class areas of the kingdom. Because of Diana’s abilities, she was able to make notes which helped her to understand and learn from the older maids. Most didn’t have that chance. However, rather than punishing Diana for her skills, she decided to use them, making Diana the head of her education program. She would be responsible for teaching all of the maids to read and write and help them use that knowledge to improve their lives whether they stayed at the palace or moved on.

Every one of Rishe’s interactions with other characters was like this. She could see what made them tick and how best to use that for the betterment of everyone. I loved watching her shake things up in this manner.

Who was your least favourite character?

You’d think it would be Michel after how I described his back story, but I don’t think it was. Like most characters in this series, they often show one side and then we get to see another as Rishe peeled back their masks. Theo started out as a fairly insane character who kidnapped her (even if she let it happen) and planned to get Arnold to give up the throne. But, as you got to understand him and saw how his intentions had been misplaced, he became more likeable. The same could be said for Kaine Tully, the merchant or Kyle Morgan Cleverly, the sickly prince from the North. Even Arnold changed under Rishe’s influence. So, I don’t think I can pick one because having an unlikable character just meant that Rishe had some work to do, which was always fun.

Would you like some more?

I can only assume that there is much more to the story, although this also ended well. If they make more, I will watch it. If they don’t I’m not going to be that put out. I feel like that’s almost the best way for a season to end. I’ve seen too many that ended with a potential cliffhanger and then never got a second season. That just leaves a sour taste. So, for this season to end as it did was refreshing. It did enough to imply that more could come, but it also showed us that Rishe had made changes and a different path might lay before them. That’s the best way to end things. No one will feel cheated if more comes along and no one is going to be left waiting for something that might never happen.

What have you learned?

I’m not sure I can put my finger on one thing and say that it was the reason for expanding my horizons, but I know that watching shows like this and reading stories that are not my automatic go-to is an essential part of growing my storytelling repertoire. The more experiences I can pull on the better I can respond to what my characters do and tell me. It’s like becoming a handyman and deciding that the hammer is your favourite tool so you will only use a hammer. You’re not going to get far by only using one tool. The more tools you have at your disposal, the better you can do your job. It’s the same for every job. More varied experiences enable us to respond to more situations and get the most out of them. So, yeah. I’ve learned, or rather confirmed, that my approach to learning is the best way forward. Get out there and try something different.

  1. I absolutely adored this show. I loved how they incorporated her other lives to make her almost superhuman. Admittedly, I swooned at Prince Arnold. My favorite moment is when he corners a “male” Rische in the courtyard. My least favorite character had to be Michel, but I understand his purpose.

    • Agreed. The way the incorporated her previous lives was very well done. It gave her an insight that she would b never have had the first time around. It was funny when she saw that he noticed it was her. I just loved how he was in a constant state of what will she do next?
