What did you watch?
I first watched Beast Tamer back in August of 2023 and I was only planning on writing a season review and maybe a couple of extra posts on the series. It was when I was trying out some new things with the website. Then some things happened and by the time I came back to write up some posts on the series, I had changed back to episode reviews. So, I decided that I would rewatch it and do it properly. That may give you a clue to how I felt about the series, but I’ll try not to give anything else away, just yet. So, let’s dive straight in!

What happened?
Rein Shroud is a beast tamer. That means that he can form contracts with various animals and get them to help him out. As the support member of the Hero’s party that usually means scouting with birds or small mammals. He often enlisted the help of larger creatures like bears to help him carry things. He thought he was doing a good job but then they fired him. They were tired of protecting him and realised that they would be better off without him. With no money or equipment, Rein decided that he would become an adventurer and headed to the local guild.
He completed his first quest and was accepted into the guild. It wasn’t easy, but he did it. Of course, he still needed money so he took on some low-level quests which mostly involved gathering herbs which was great because he could get rabbits to find it for him. On his way back to the guild, Rein heard a scream in the woods. He ran to help and found a cat spirit, one of the ultimate species, being attacked by a monster. He rushed to help without any thought of his own safety. His dagger broke when he attacked, leaving him defenceless. His act of bravery inspired the cat spirit to fight back with the last of her energy.
She woke in Rein’s arms. She was shocked and then when she heard about how the Hero’s party treated him, she was furious. However, she could also tell that Rein wasn’t an ordinary beast tamer and asked him to make a contract with her. That’s crazy. He’d never heard of anyone forming a contract with an ultimate species. However, Kanade was sure he could do it.

What did you think?
I will be the first to admit that this series is not perfect. Well, it’s not perfect if you’re looking for a dark fantasy full of grief and despair. If you’re looking for something heartwarming and entertaining with a splash of danger and mystery, then this might be just what you’re looking for. The stakes are never really that high so there’s no danger, but that’s also one of the aspects I loved about it. Beast Tamer is one of those series where you can just sit back and enjoy. There are moments that might leave you quite frustrated and they mostly involve the Hero’s party. There are also some ideas that could become quite complex if you really want to analyse them, however, it’s not important if you don’t. I loved the characters in this series which made the overall experience extremely positive.

What was your favourite moment?
There were a lot of fun moments, but the episode where the Hero’s party picked a fight with Rein, Kanade, and Tania was excellent. We got to see just how strong Rein has become thanks to his contracts with Kanade and Tania. Plus we got to see Kanade pound Aggath into submission. However, Tania showing Mina and Leane just how far behind her they were in terms of magic was spectacular. Combined with her domineering attitude and savagely dry humour, it was just a spectacular moment. Of course, Rein beat Arios with ease and then ran off with Kanade and Tania. A truly satisfying moment.

What was your least favourite moment?
There were a couple of darker moments that kind of got glossed over. We saw how Edgar treated Nina, the fox demi-god and it was disgusting. He was an absolute monster and it was nice to see him get what he deserved. However, in the final episode, we meet Tina, the ghost. She told a brief story about how she worked for a guy who would beat his staff, particularly the women. Then, she died and assumed he had gone too far. She kind of shrugged it off as it happened a long time ago, but I was stunned. That’s a fairly dark thing to just ignore.

Who was your favourite character?
It was Tania, and I’m pretty sure it Tania from the moment I saw the title image, which is usually how I pick what I’m going to watch. She is the fiery redhead, literally as she is also a dragonoid. When we first met her, she was in her dragon form before changing into her stunning human form. Then, she picked a fight with Rein and Kanade. I love how over-the-top she is and her reactions to things that annoy her just exemplify that. She’s fiercely loyal to Rein and Kanade, and the others who join later. I liked that she had a moment of self-doubt after allowing Rein to get injured as that allowed her to come back stronger. Who doesn’t love a fiery redhead?

Who was your least favourite character?
Arios is the obvious choice here and I’ll freely admit that I hate that guy and see him becoming the ultimate villain in this story, maybe even the Demon King. However, there was one character who seemed to be a fraction worse. Surprisingly, I’m not talking about Edgar either. I think Leane, the witch from the Hero’s party was an awful person. Even when Arios was clearly making decisions that were evil, she backed him up. Aggath and Mina found themselves questioning his judgement and going against it, if only for a moment. Leane was bitter and spiteful. I don’t believe that she is influencing Arios, but she definitely reinforced his twisted ideas.

Would you like some more?
When this season ended, Rein told us that it was more like the end of the prologue. If that’s the case, then we have a lot more story to go. Given what we experienced with the hints about the Demon King and Arios then I absolutely believe that. And, given how much I enjoyed this season, I would love another. Sadly, this doesn’t feel like a series that will get another season, but one was teased with the author claiming that the second season would blow the first out of the water. I hope that is the case. So, yes. Give me more!

What have you learned?
I loved how this series was like ninety percent cute and fun and ten percent dark. It managed to balance that quite well, although there were some things that maybe went a little too dark, such as Edgar beating Nina and the way Tina died. That said, it shows that you can mix dark and light elements. You can have a harem where nothing happens between the girls and the guy. Maybe further down the line, something will happen, but right now it’s more like a group of friends… friends with contracts… I joke, it’s nothing like the contracts in Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World, which had the percentages flipped. I thoroughly enjoyed both which also tells me that there is room for all sorts of ratios. Basically, everything is fair game!

I really enjoyed Beast Tamer. I am a bit leery of a second season. I feel like it might be more of the same, however, if/when a second season appears, I’ll definitely give it a try.
Apparently, this season was more or less a prologue, setting him up with his party. The author claims the next part of the story is completely different. I’m super curious to see what they mean.
I’d like to see a season 2. However, it depends if the merchandise they have sold accumulated enough funds to warrant that, but I’m still hopeful we’ll have that sequel. My favorites would be Tania and the twins.
Now that they have a settled party, it would be interesting to see what they can do. I’ve seen far worse get shows get a second season so there’s always a chance. And Tanya was my favourite. I loved how fiery she was!
