What did you watch?

It’s starting to look like cliffhangers are going to be a continuing theme for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. We’ve had a couple in a row now, so it’s no surprise that episode 9 is following on directly from the last episode. Things are about to get very messy for Tanjiro and Nezuko. Let’s get right into it, shall we? There will be spoilers going forward…

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Episode 9 Susamaru Having Fun

What happened?

Lady Tamayo’s house was discovered by two of Kibutsuji’s demons and was instantly attacked by a pair of Temari, bouncing around the room, destroying everything they touched, including Yushiro’s head! Don’t worry though, he is a demon after all! Tanjiro rushed out of the house, determined to take the demon on and protect the others, but she is far more powerful than he could have imagined.

Claiming to be one of the twelve Demon Moons, she morphed growing another two pairs of arms. Before Tanjiro could react she flung six Temari at him, all flying independently in varied directions. Luckily, Yushiro, having regrown his head, gifts Tanjiro the ability to see the arrows that control the Temari. Nezuko meanwhile has tracked down the demon controlling the arrows and distracted him long enough for Tanjiro to unleash a powerful attack.

What did you think?

This episode was literally just one long fight and it’s still not over… This is covered in shounen 101, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Admittedly, this series has avoided some of the shounen cliches and embraced others. I was a little surprised considering the fight kind of began at the end of the last episode, but I still loved it. Now, with the way Demon Slayer has been going, I would be surprised if it continued beyond the next episode, but all bets are off. Also, the fact that we now know that there are another ten demons as powerful, if not more so than these two, is awesome.

What was your favourite moment?

Without spoiling the end of the episode too much, it was that. Tanjiro, in a bit of a pickle, managed to weave several of his most powerful water blade techniques into a single attack and honestly it was epic! I love a good sword fight and I love the art style they’ve used to depict Tanjiro’s attacks, so altogether it’s just wonderful.

What was your least favourite moment?

There was one moment that kind of annoyed me. Tanjiro had just cut the arms off the demon with Temaris and asked Tamayo if the demon would be close to Kibutsuji. She said yes, so Tanjiro proclaimed that he would get the demon’s blood for her. So, assuming that we wouldn’t remember what happened in the last episode we get a brief flashback. Fine, it’s annoying but whatever. Then, assuming that we wouldn’t remember what happened before the flashback, we got to see that again… Come on!

Who was your favourite character?

Tanjiro and Nezuko are obviously cool, but I’m sorry, how amazing was the Temari demon, Susamaru. She had the same hair colouring as Nezuko and a pretty cool looking kimono, but when she slipped the shoulders off and sprouted two more sets of arms, I was like, YESSSSSSS! I love the design of the demons in this series and it would appear that there is an endless depth to what they can do. So much potential!

Who was your least favourite character?

For a two-hundred-year-old demon, Lady Tamayo really didn’t seem to be up to much. Yes, she only eats blood and that may affect her strength, but based on the way Yushiro attacks I doubt it. Why wasn’t she in there doing some damage? I was expecting a little more from her. There’s obviously still plenty of time for that to happen though, so I haven’t given up on her yet!

Would you like some more?

Just try and stop me. I know there will be those that will be annoyed a fight that went on for a whole episode and didn’t reach a conclusion, but I’m not one of those people. As long as the fight stays interesting, I’ll be on-board for as long as it takes, but the second you start throwing flashbacks at me and repeating the same thing over and over, then I’ll start to get annoyed. Hopefully, that won’t happen given how well they’ve handled things so far.

    Yeah, me either! Especially when the fight was so interesting as this one!

    And moments like that are why it was so interesting!

    • It’s cool watching him try to assess the situation while dodging the Temaris and the epic moves are always best when we can see the progression from somewhere. I hate it when they pull something out of the blue.
