Dirty Pair (Episode 1) – How to Kill a Computer

Kei and Yuri find themselves trapped inside a giant city when the artificial intelligence, Brian goes berserk. Can the Dirty Pair… uh, I mean Lovely Angels restore order or is this city doomed? Maybe, both!
Dirty Pair (Episode 1) – How to Kill a Computer
What happened?
In Kei’s room, the temperature was out of control. No matter what she did it wouldn’t cool down. She ran into Yuri’s room to discover that she had the opposite problem. It would appear that Brian, the artificial intelligence that maintains every function of the city had gone haywire. As agents for the 3WA and code-named the Lovely Angels, Kei and Yuri took it upon themselves to get to the bottom of things.
However, Brian was on to them. First, he sent them to the rooftop and then tried to attack them with the tower’s defences. Their faithful pet, Mughi managed to escape the tower with the hopes of bringing back their ship – The Lovely Angel. He was successful, and with their own AI, Nanmo, they opened communications with Brian. Brian was angry that he discovered a system in the city that could override him. He thought the humans trusted him, but not anymore. There had to be something they could do to stop Brian!

What did you think?
At first, I wasn’t sure whether I would do full episode reviews for Dirty Pair because of the animation quality or more specifically the 480p resolution. However, after finally watching the first episode after waiting for decades, I knew that I needed to talk about this series. I grew up watching shows like Dominion Tank Police, Appleseed, and the Guyver. There’s something about the animation style from that era that gives me warm and fuzzy feelings.
I’ve only ever read the manga of Dirty Pair from the mid-nineties, which I only recently learnt was actually an original English-language manga by Adam Warren, so I am familiar with the characters and the general idea of the show. That said, this was a great first episode regardless. Had you been paying attention, you would have learnt a lot about the characters and what to expect from the series. I’m excited to continue.

What have you learnt?
Other than the joy of electro-pop used as background music, this episode did an amazing job of throwing us into the action and slowly piecing together the characters and the world. The first thing I noticed was when Kei went into Yuri’s room and it was freezing. She leapt into Mughi’s fur and used her toes to type on the computer console. That felt like a very feminine action and I wonder if that wasn’t a deliberate attempt to offset the chaos that followed.
Things were pretty bad. Elevators were being thrown off the side of buildings, people were definitely dying. However, Kei and Yuri managed to get into an argument with two kids drifting past them who called them old ladies. I really enjoyed the banter between Kei and Yuri, most notably when they were falling off the roof. They have a bizarre chemistry that tells you they have known each other for a long time. Then, the reluctance to the name that they are more commonly known by said a lot. I don’t think they wasted a single moment in this episode and still, it left me wanting to know more.

That series is a lot of fun! I just finished the last of the 12 OVAs. Haven’t got to the Dirty Pair Flash reboot yet.
I watched the Flash reboot back when it came out, but this is my first time watching the original series. I also have the movie on DVD which I’ll watch once I get through the series. I’m 10 episodes in and loving it so far.
There the regular series and then the OVAs. All are available on the Noxomi YouTibe channel free.
Cool. Will check it out.
