Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Episode 59) – Lost Light
Mustang refuses to perform human transmutation just as the cavalry arrives. They appear to have turned the tables, but then King Bradley shows up along with Pride. However, it’s not like they can force Mustang to do it… can they?
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Episode 59) – Lost Light
What happened?
Even with Riza Hawkeye dying before his eyes, Mustang refused to perform human transmutation, much to the surprise of the Gold-toothed Doctor. He was even more surprised to find himself suspended above the room by a chimaera moments later. Darius, Zampano, Jerso, and Mei Chang joined the fight and quickly defeated the failed fuhrers. Mei even managed to stop Riza from bleeding out. Now, if she could just get her hands on that philosopher’s stone.
Unfortunately, there was no time to enjoy their victory as King Bradley emerged from the shadows. Even in his beat-up state, he commanded a healthy amount of fear and respect. Pride then came through the ceiling capturing the Gold-toothed Doctor. Mustang was momentarily distracted and that was enough time for Bradley to pin him to the floor.
Pride created the transmutation circle and opened the portal making Mustang the fifth sacrifice. He arrived moments later with Edward and Izumi, however, he couldn’t see a thing. The truth had taken his vision. Regardless, there are now five sacrifices and the eclipse has begun.
The last of the sacrifices to arrive was Alphonse who gave up the chance to return to his body in order to help fight against Father. It was a tough decision and while it garnered respect from his body, it also meant that Father could begin the process. Did Alphonse just doom everyone?
What did you think?
You just can’t keep Bradley down! When the fight between Scar and Bradley began, I quickly checked the run time to make sure it wasn’t going to abruptly end and continue in the next episode. I was reassured that there was plenty of time, had the focus not shifted. Looks like the big fight will have to wait. This episode was brilliant and shocking. Imagine being forced to enter the portal where Truth would take something of yours.
I think Pride also went through the portal and that will cost him something. He seemed to be breaking down and that’s going to be an important thing at some point. I do wonder if he is now an acceptable sacrifice. In fact, I was surprised that more people weren’t summoned. You would have thought there would have been at least one other alchemist that had tried it. Oh well, on to the next episode!
What have you learnt?
So, Scar will have to fight Wrath once more… By that I mean that he has had to overcome his own wrath to become a better person. That makes me wonder if anyone else has had to deal with the personification of their own flaws. I think it works for Ling in a way. He wanted to become immortal, and now he’s stuck with Greed. I wonder if Alex Louis Armstrong defeating Sloth was a reflection of his inability to do anything that mattered when it mattered.
Mustang burnt up Lust. Could that be symbolic of him throwing away his desires to make a serious push for the fuhrer’s position? He also pretty much killed Envy and he was definitely jealous of the power the fuhrer has. I think Pride will be his own undoing thanks to what he did to Mustang. I can only assume that he was so sure it wouldn’t do anything to him. I don’t know. Maybe, I’m trying to find something that isn’t there, but it does raise some interesting ideas.
