Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Episode 60) – Eye of Heaven, Gateway of Earth
Father has the five sacrifices where he wants them and is just biding time until the eclipse occurs. This might be their last chance to stop him… if that’s even possible!
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Episode 60) – Eye of Heaven, Gateway of Earth
What happened?
Mei Chang managed to get into Father’s bowels and is determined to defeat him and take his philosopher’s stone. However, he’s far stronger than her, even with her alkehestry. Alphonse runs to protect Mei Chang while Edward goes after Pride. Izumi attempts to keep Father busy, but that’s proving tricky, too!
King Bradley is delighted to have a chance to focus on just his survival as he faces Scar. Their fight is intense, with Scar destroying one of Bradley’s swords. However, Bradley caught the blade and drove it into Scar’s arm. Luckily, he has a trick up his sleeve. He may have the power to destroy with his right hand, but he can also create with his left, and now he has accepted that gift from his brother.
Once the moon has eclipsed the sun, Father begins the process. That’s when Greed strikes, slashing Father to pieces. Of course, Father saw it coming and activates the sacrifices. Each of them opens a portal to the Truth which in turn attacks Father. He absorbs all the power and uses that to activate the nationwide transmutation circle.
He kills everyone in Amestris and uses that power to challenge the Truth, pulling it towards him so that he can consume it!
What did you think?
What the f@#k! It’s often said that it’s always darkest right before the dawn and this was dark! Everyone in Amestris is dead. Well, it was a great series, but this is quite the downer to end things on. If only there were four more episodes and a handful of Ishvalans running around setting up some sort of countermeasure to the giant cyclops that’s about to eat a god!
It shouldn’t have surprised me. Anime has a long history of these insanely crazy developments at the end of a series, but I still wasn’t expecting this. In truth, I had no idea what to expect with Father. I will say that I’m not a huge fan of the form where he’s got lots of eyes. That looks kind of derpy, unlike Pride’s version which is actually a very cool design. The transformation to a giant god-eating monster was a significant improvement. I can’t wait to see how they get out of this one.
What have you learnt?
Amazingly, there don’t appear to be any loose ends dangling away without any attention. Sure, there have been some that have only been teased into position, but that’s fine. I can’t think of any glaringly obvious problems with the story at this stage and that’s impressive. A lot has happened in sixty episodes and I feel like we’re going to get the same again in the final four episodes.
I loved the revelation that Scar was given both of his brother’s arms and has the power to destroy and create. That’s some serious dedication to his beliefs to have kept that one under wraps. That’s been a great example of a payoff from some fine foreshadowing and this series is full of it. As soon as it happened, I could see Scar’s brother looking at his arms and talking about destruction and creation. I don’t remember when it happened, but I know it did and that’s what makes for great foreshadowing. It should be surprising at first, and then completely expected after the fact. It should seem like the only thing that could have happened.
