How Not To Summon A Demon Lord Title

It’s the final showdown. Krebskulm has fully awakened and is looking for mortals to kill, but Diablo has just shown up and he’s been itching for this fight for some time now. Let’s get it on!

What did you watch?

Well, here we are. It the final episode of season one of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord. There’s still no news on a second season, so it could very well be the last one ever… Everything has been building up to this moment. So, let’s get on with it and have a look at episode 12. You can obviously expect spoilers.

What happened?

So, Krebskulm appeared before Diablo and started to tear up Faltra city. An army of Fallen had gathered outside the city walls waiting for this chance to join in. Only Celestine’s barrier and Diablo stood between them. Diablo quickly jumped into action preparing a massive spell for a massive demon lord. Shera raced off with the recovery potions to help Rem. The battle between Krebskulm and Diablo continued. Then, Diablo placed his last spell and prepared to unleash his ultimate attack.

It took Krebskulm down, but she wasn’t out. Rem and Shera walked into the battle, thanks to Emile saving them from a flying coffin with his face, and appealed to Clem to regain control. Seeing that Rem was alive and well, Clem reappeared. The Fallen army dispersed and all was safe in Faltra city once more. Sylvie was a little concerned about Clem being in the city, but then Diablo performed an enslavement spell on her so that she wouldn’t be able to lose control again. That just about wiped out all of Diablo’s magic reserves. So all that’s left, is to relax and recharge!

What did you think?

I thought that this was a great conclusion to a very entertaining series. The battle itself was excellent, lasting almost half the episode. One thing that I really enjoyed was how everything came together. All the events and characters from the previous episodes had a part to play and it managed to bring everything together. It also felt natural which is the most impressive part. Anyone can throw in some old characters, but for them to feel like they are supposed to be there shows some thought and consideration in the story-telling.

What was your favourite moment?

It has to be the fight. That was epic and I loved the size differences. The miz of colours was excellent too, making for a very vivid and entertaining fight. One of Diablo’s strengths has been how unfazed by anything dangerous, in comparison to anything of the social nature where he becomes useless. Anyhow, back to the fight. It built on the way we’ve seen Diablo fight to date and while it was a new spell it again felt like something he’d do. No Deus ex Machina’s here. It was satisfying and even the way it ended which brought Shera and Rem into the fight too, felt like the natural way to end it.

What was your least favourite moment?

I don’t have a least favourite moment as the whole episode worked and every part was needed no matter how small or insignificant it may have seemed. Just so I have something to put here, I’m going to mention the time Emile saved Shera and Rem with his face. Emile started off as a massive joke and while he still remained a joke, he definitely grows on you and I do feel sorry for him here, but then he also seemed happy to help.

Who was your favourite character?

One of the bigger surprises in the series was Alicia. She entered as a knight with orders from the King to help prevent the war between humans and elves. And that would have been it if you hadn’t been paying attention. The whole time Alicia was looking to revive Krebskulm and piece by piece she’s been putting her plan into motion. It’s great to see a character make such a drastic change but still feel like the same person. Even in this episode alone, Alicia has given is a wild range of emotions. Whilst her evil persona was so cool, I can’t help but like this one better. She had all but given up when Diablo saved her and gave her some advice that called on his own experiences of loneliness.

Who was your least favourite character?

I love Alicia, really I do, but no one puts a blade to Shera’s… um… that’s her neck, right? Alicia has been one of the really interesting characters from this season and should we get a second, I do hope she returns and can offer more as a morally ambiguous character. Sure, she’s a heroic knight, but she also wanted to kill everyone in the world!

Would you like some more?

The fact that there still hasn’t been any news on a second season is disheartening because I would love some more. This series shows what can be achieved in the ecchi genre if the story is given some thought. You can have varied and interesting characters, a well thought out story that progresses without being forced, and a world with room for expansion. There’s still the Fallen and the Demon Lord worshippers, there are monsters and feuds. We don’t need to find out the answer to everything. We just want a satisfying story about interesting people. We also really, really want another season…

  1. “One of the bigger surprises in the series was Alicia.”

I’m surprised to say this, but Alicia came _this close_ to being my favorite character in the series.

Of course, Shera’s actually my favorite, for all the obvious reasons and because she’s just so up beat. I need more of that in my life.

    • Everyone would benefit from more Shera in their lives. I’m still waiting for another season.
