How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Episode 7) – Change of Heart
Keera is determined to get Shera back and will use all the tricks at his disposal. Unfortunately, one of them appears to be working as Shera abandons Diablo, bringing up some ugly memories from his childhood.
What did you watch?
So, this was episode 7 of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and it continued the Shera arc, bringing her brother, Keera back into things. We also get a look at Diablo’s childhood and see how that has affected him. Even with as much fan-service as this series has, it still manages to cover some interesting topics and is certainly not your average Isekai. There will be spoilers after this angry picture of Diablo. You have been warned!
What happened?
With Alicia and Rem going out to take care of some business, Shera and Diablo decide to make some potions. Diablo used to do it in the game all the time, but trying to make it himself is a different thing altogether. He soon discovers, however, that if he can distract his mind, his hands will automatically go through the motions. Now, if only he could find something to distract him. I wonder if Shera has any ideas!?
Keera returns and almost instantly, Shera reveals that she is going home, shattering Diablo’s belief that he had found friends at long last. We see a flashback from his childhood where two other children were using him for items for a videogame. He was crushed and even though things didn’t seem right, he couldn’t put his finger on what it was. Rem finally told Diablo that she was going to get her back, even if he wouldn’t help, but of course, he will.
What did you think?
This was a fun episode. I really liked how we got to see a small glimpse into Diablo’s childhood and can see the longterm effects of the children pretending to be his friends. It certainly pushed him in the direction of becoming a loner shut-in. As always, Shera is a delight and manages to hog a lot of screentime, but I don’t hear anyone complaining.
What was your favourite moment?
Was it the scene with the slime? Maybe, but I’m not saying… I did really enjoy the moment that Diablo arrived to rescue Shera. It was cool how he just slashed open Keera’s tent and destroyed the slime. Then, he rushed forwards and caught Shera as she fell, ignoring Keera who was only a pace away because he’s an insignificant weakling. The best thing about overpowered characters is always the reactions of people who weren’t expecting it.
What was your least favourite moment?
It was sad seeing Diablo as a child. He seemed so happy that his skills with a video game had given him to chance to make actual friends. I think that’s what broke him. No doubt, finding friends hadn’t been easy and then when he finally did, it turned out they were just using him for items in the game.
Who was your favourite character?
I think that’s one of the things that makes Diablo such an interesting character. Sure, he’s overpowered and pretty much invincible, but he has problems that he struggles to overcome which are centred around his social anxiety. That makes everyday interactions his real enemy and again why it would be so believable for him to retreat to being a shut-in after Shera abandoned him.
Who was your least favourite character?
Well, Keera is still crazy and anyone that would make Shera cry like that deserves a swift exit. Unfortunately, we’re not going to get that as he’s just summed a world-ending hydra… If that’s not something to look forward to in the next episode, then I don’t know what is. Also, Keera… that’s your sister, dude!
Would you like some more?
I referred to the last episode as the soggy middle of the story and this one, while better, is probably still in the same section. Having Shera’s story and Rem’s story is great. I love that both of the characters are getting developed, however, I feel like Rem’s story is more significant. This leaves Shera’s feeling a little bit like a side plot. Any excuse for more Shera is fine with me, so I’m not sure where I’m going with this. Anyhow, I’m definitely looking forward to the next one. There’s a big fight coming… and maybe more…
