Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III (Season Three)

Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon III Title

Bell encounters a monster in the dungeon and saves her from another monster. It’s odd to see monsters attacking one another and even stranger when this monster speaks. This changes everything!

What did you watch?

I don’t think it’s any secret that I absolutely loved season one of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. Having watched it as part of my Anime A to Z challenge, I was lucky enough to be able to jump almost immediately into season two. Unfortunately, season two failed to live up to the first season and despite that, I felt compelled to continue reviewing the series so here we are. I only followed two seasons live from the Fall 2020 and this was one of them. As normal, there will be spoilers in this review, so don’t go any further unless you’ve seen it or don’t mind spoilers…

What happened?

Whilst exploring the deeper levels of the dungeon Bell came across a girl who was being attacked by some monsters. He saved her and was surprised to see that she too was a monster – a Vouivre to be precise. Then Bell notices a group of humans approaching and puts his cloak over the girl, hiding her from them. His instincts were correct as they were hunting her. Against his better judgement and that of his party, Bell decides to bring the girl to Hestia. They learn that she has memories of past lives in the dungeon.

Another of the gods, Ouranos gives Bell the mission to take Weine, the Vouivre, back to the floor that he found her on. It’s a mission that he cannot refuse and once there, they are ambushed by more monsters that appear capable of using weapons. Of course, they were only testing Bell and his party to see if they really were looking after Weine. After leaving Weine with the monsters, they return to the surface but things take a turn for the worse when the members of Ikalos’ Familia capture Weine with the intention of selling her.

What did you think?

So, if I’m completely honest, I was a little disappointed in this season. It had some good moments, but they weren’t enough to make up for the overall feel. I criticised season two for being to fast and not given any of the stories enough weight, but in this season it moved so slowly that I found myself getting bored. When there were fights, they were exciting, however, too often we focused on one thing that never amounted to anything while other elements were ignored. There was a moment in this season that could have changed everything, but it was undone as quickly as it was done and all consequences were forgotten.

What was your favourite moment?

It had to be the fight between Bell and Ais. If anything, this is what we’d been waiting for. Although it has an old-fashioned vibe similar to Red Sonja where she would only be with a man that could beat her in combat, I get the sense that is what Ais is waiting for too. Unfortunately for Bell, he’s not good enough to do that, which in reality is something we’ve known since the beginning on season one. Bell needs to get stronger. Isn’t that what this series is about?

Anyhow, back to the fight. Bell knew he couldn’t win, one on one and was forced to use just about every trick he could think of. That was great as it added a sense of realism to the fight and showed just how far apart these two are. I also liked the way the fight ended up in the same place that Bell fought the ape monster in season one to protect Hestia, especially as it ended up being Weine protecting Bell.

What was your least favourite moment?

So, Dix had pulled the jewel out of Weine’s forehead making her take on her full dragon-girl form. He then cursed her and sent her free and wild into the streets of Daedalus. Bell was trying to get her under control but then Loki’s Familia showed up and looked to change everything. Unable to reveal that he was trying to protect her, Bell chased Weine as she rampaged through the town, firing off stray fire bolts at anyone that got too close.

Weine was ushered into an arena where several mages were on hand to hit her with a massive magic attack. On top of that, Dix’s number one henchman then finished the job with Dix’s broken spear. Bell and Weine fell into the depths below the arena where Weine thanked him for trying to save her and being with her in the end. She died in Bell’s arms. It was all quite emotional.

However, then Fels showed up and used a spell that he had been unable to use, and he’d been trying for quite some time. He managed to completely revive Weine and nullify the moments leading up to this point. It could have been the moment that Bell fully went rogue and given him the push he needed, but it wasn’t and things went back to the way they were beforehand.

Who was your favourite character?

It’s no secret that I like Ryu Lion and Aisha. They were my favourite characters from the previous two season and I was absolutely delighted to see these two pair up on numerous occasions in this season. However, that said, I really think they failed to use them in a manner they deserved. Ryu was used to accidentally deliver a magical device that helped Bell out of a problem that even Fels couldn’t solve. Aisha showed up several times and each time was beaten. Together they should have been a great source of comedy with their differing personalities. Sadly, it just wasn’t to be.

Who was your least favourite character?

I don’t mind one-dimensional characters, especially evil villains as long as there’s a bit of balance. They can’t all be evil for the sake of it as then it gets boring. Now, Dix had his reasons for being crazy which made sense, but what about all of the other members of the Familia. They just seemed to be crazy because he was. On top of that, calling him Dix was a little too on the nose and felt incredibly lazy, especially when he was a part of the evil organisation – Evilus.

Would you like some more?

Annoyingly, I know that if they make another season, I will watch it. The first season has too much of a hold on me to not want to see where this story goes. I can only hope that it gets back to the type of storytelling that made season one so exciting. Luckily, it would appear that once we reached the end of this season, everything was back to where it was and it was as if nothing had happened. Sure, Bell suffered a couple of loses, which may have been needed after a couple of wins in season two, but other than that, it’s as if it never happened.

What have you learnt?

Side quests are good, but they should remain as side quests. I feel like this season took a side quest and dragged it out to fill the entire season. The pacing was slow and it really didn’t make you want to continue. I know that if I wasn’t so invested in the earlier story, I would have struggled to finish this season. When we got to the end and even Liliruca commented that everything was back to normal, it felt like we’d just woken up from a dream and nothing in this season had really happened. That just so happens to be my least favourite ending ever!

Basically, every moment in a story doesn’t have to have a purpose, but if it’s going to be such a large part of the story, making it seem irrelevant almost immediately after it’s finished is incredibly frustrating.

    • Thanks. It wasn’t a bad series, just didn’t live up to my memories of the first season.
