Jujutsu Kaisen (Episode 4) – Curse Womb Must Die

Jujutsu Kaisen Title

Nobara, Fushiguro, and Itadori are sent in to account for the missing prisoners at a juvenile detention facility where a strange object was spotted in the sky but must avoid the special grade curse at all costs!

What happened?

All of the Jujutsu Sorcerers were busy with other curses which left just Nobara, Fushiguro, and Itadori as the only ones able to help. The object in the sky has been identified as a curse womb, where special grade curses are produced. They’ve evacuated everyone that they could and cleared the surrounding area although there are five inmates as of yet accounted for.

Their job is to go inside the detention block, find them, and get out. They are to avoid the special grade curse, which is basically the boss of curses. Itadori is his usual enthusiastic self while Fushiguro and Nobara are far more cautious. Ignorance really is bliss! They enter the facility with one of Fushiguro’s demon dogs guiding the way.

Once inside, they freeze. The space within the building has been warped and appears far larger than the two-storey building they entered. Fushiguro spins around and finds what he feared. The door has vanished. They will not be leaving the same way they came in.

They soon find the mangled remains of three of the inmates. Itadori recognizes one of them as the son of a woman outside and says that they should take his body with them so that she will at least have some peace. Fushiguro is not on board with that plan. Before entering he read the files of all the people they were looking for and had no intention of saving any of them.

Itadori and Fushiguro’s dispute turned into an argument, but then they felt something. Nobara fell through a shadow in the floor behind them as a sinister face appeared between them. Both were frozen stiff, unable to more. They could sense the cursed energy flowing from the special grade curse.

Itadori pushed his body to move, pulling his blade and slashing at the curse. There was a splattering of blood and then Itadori’s hand, still holding the blade slapped against the floor behind them. The special grade curse let out a menacing laugh as it unleashed an attack that sent them flying. Itadori told Fushiguro to find Nobara and give him a sign when they were clear.

Once they were safe, he would release Sukuna to fight the special grade, although Sukuna isn’t exactly going to do what he’s told.

What did you think?

If anyone asks me the moment that I really got into Jujutsu Kaisen, I will tell them that it was this episode. The special grade curse was brilliantly creepy, especially the way it appeared next to Itadori and Fushiguro. It seemed to be toying with them too and certainly did Itadori plenty of damage before Sukuna took over. The change in the special grade curse at that moment was amazing. It basically crapped its pants at the sight of him.

I loved how completely ambivalent Sukuna was and gave the special grade curse little to no thought. Originally, he wanted to use it to go after Fushiguro together, but it had no interest in that. So, he chopped it to pieces. The special grade curse healed itself, but Sukuna had already done that to Itadori’s body too. He then used some serious magic to slice it into pieces and recovered another finger from within. This episode was mental and I loved it.

What have you learnt?

It would appear that Sukuna is also interested in collecting all of his fingers, especially now that he has a host body that is compatible. I get the feeling that their conflict is going to get more and more intense. Also, it looks like Itadori has not been able to regain control immediately. I wonder if there will be a good reason for that or whether it will be the usual goofy explanation like Itadori had fallen asleep.

The next episode continues directly from this one so we should find out soon enough. I’m glad that this series isn’t pulling any punches with the darker elements. If anything it looks like it’s going to embrace them. I’m excited to see where we go from here, especially as the preview for this arc said that three first-year Jujutsu students were sent in and one died!
