Kingdom of Z (Volume 6) – Zombie Master Showdown!
What happened?
Miki offered Ishibashi a position at the university as his reward for switching sides. It comes with a good salary and that would ensure he has a comfortable life. First, however, he will need to phone Nikaidou and convince him that he’s been captured. When Ishibashi calls, Ichijou is there too which is exactly what Miki was hoping. Ishibashi puts on a show and then the line is cut. Now, they need to wait and see if her prediction is correct. She’s expecting Nikaidou to come without Ichijou. She thinks he’s itching for a fight and she’s just given him an excuse to start one.
Of course, it won’t be much of a fight. Nikaidou has a small unit of fifteen men and as such he believes they can zombify the University, turning the numbers against them. To do this they have a truck full of zombies, drones with knives coated in zombie blood, and every man is prepared to zombify themselves if they are caught. It’s foolproof. However, to make sure things go his way, he’s contacted Shiki the Zombie Master to attack the University too. Unfortunately for Nikaidou, Miki was prepared for this. The only detail they got wrong was that they thought Nikaidou’s group would use water guns with zombie blood in them. When Nikaidou attacked, his entire team quickly surrendered without a single one of them zombifying themselves.
Meanwhile, Miki, Karin, Satou, and Ritsuka have gone to stop Shiki. He believes that he has been chosen by god and that’s why he can control zombies. However, he soon realises that he is not the only one. Ritsuka sends waves of zombies at him, forcing him to split his forces. That leaves, Miki and Karin to take on his two strongest zombies – a couple of former mixed martial artists that he’s turned into his playthings. He didn’t count on the A-ranked zombies at Ritsuka’s disposal or Miki’s plan to separate his zombies and annihilate them. After defeating Shiki and his horde, word spread of a good zombie master who worked with the University. They used that rumour to extend their control, bringing much of Tokyo back together.
Miki and the others left the university and travelled Japan, searching for other evil zombie masters and making sure they couldn’t hurt any more people.
What did you think?
Well, this was more like it. There was tons of action and it was all really well thought out. I loved how we saw Nikaidou’s plans to take over the University play out. Then, we got to watch them fall apart as he was outplayed by Miki. However, the best part was the zombie battle between Ritsuka and Shiki. That could have gone on much longer and I’d have liked to see more of the fights between Miki, Karin, and Shiki’s fighters. It was annoying not to see them defeating them in real-time, but I get the feeling that the decision had been made to stop after the sixth volume so they made sure to wrap things up. I can appreciate that too. This felt like it had an open ending rather than just not giving us any sense of conclusion.
This series has been fun and I’ve enjoyed the strategic elements. Now, I’d like to see a prequel series that focuses on Miki and Karin as they survive the initial outbreak. I think that could be a crazy adventure and they are certainly cool enough characters to attract readers.
