KonoSuba: God’s blessing on this wonderful world! (Episode 28) – A Farewell to This Lavish Lifestyle!
What happened?
Kazuma isn’t interested in helping Chris despite what Eris asked him last time he died. Then Chris tells him that the Divine Treasure that Iris has can be used to achieve immortality and if anyone found out, they would all be fighting to claim it. Since he’s got to leave, he figures he’ll help Iris out this one last time and agrees to accompany Chris. They don some fancy thief equipment while Kazuma also adds Vanir’s mask to hide his face. There’s a little discussion about what to call each other which they settle with a game of rock, paper, scissors. Kazuma surprisingly loses.
They break into the palace using Kazuma’s Sneak, Lurk, and Enemy Detection to get past the guards. However, he bumps into Chris and feels her boobs against his back. There’s no going back from that so he ends up rubbing himself against her, which causes her to yell at him, revealing their location. The guards hurry to stop them, but Kazuma uses Summon Water and Freeze to make it impossible for them to follow. Chris sets a barrier at the top of the stairs, but they soon discover that they are trapped as Claire and Rain are waiting for them with a large group of guards. Chris suggests they escape out of the skylight, but Kazuma wants to get this done.
He takes on Claire and uses Drain, taking her out. Then, he uses it on the guards. One by one, he brings them to their knees. Then, Misturugi arrives and since he last lost his sword, he’s made plans so that it can’t be stolen again. Luckily, Kazuma uses Freeze instead so that he can’t draw it and then drowns him with Summon Water. Claire and Rain run to help him as Kazuma and Chris race on. They reach Princess Iris’ room, however, Darkness is waiting at the door. She recognises them instantly, however, Megumin doesn’t and is actually quite taken by the dark and mysterious-looking thieves. Kazuma and Chris dash past Darkness and both use steal at the same time. They got the treasure and escaped from the castle. However, now they need to answer to Darkness!
What did you think?
I’ve had a bit of a tough time with sequel seasons of late. Too often, they fail to match the energy of the first season. KonoSuba, however, continues to be as good as it ever was and I think that’s because these don’t feel like different seasons. Even with a break of seven years between seasons two and three, it feels like the same thing. It helps that KonoSuba is often made up of lots of smaller jokes that slowly build to tell a larger story. That story has been building from season to season and I doubt we’ll get anywhere near the end by the end of this season. Hopefully, that’ll mean many, many more.
This episode was probably my favourite of this season so far. It’s amazing to see that Kazuma is actually very skilled and when he puts his mind to it, he’s almost unbeatable. No one got close to stopping him and he was up against Claire, Rain, Mitsurugi, Darkness, Megumin, and Aqua. I think he makes an amazing team with Chris too, and the moment he finds out that she is actually Eris is going to be hilarious. Anyhow, I loved that Darkness recognised them instantly and also dealt with Kazuma accidentally stealing Iris’ ring. Of course, it’s even better when you realise that Iris also knew it was Kazuma and the significance of him having the ring, especially when Darkness told her that Kazuma would one day defeat the Demon King!
Finally, there was a scene after the ED (which is always amazing. I love that it’s sung by the VAs of Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness.) where we saw Alderp disciplining someone for losing his Divine Treasure. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him!
