Momo Kyun Sword (Season One)
What did you watch?
A while back I watched Peach Boy Riverside and found the legend behind the peach to be quite interesting. The lack of any real explanation, however, was a little frustrating. Nonetheless, that brought me to Momo Kyun Sword which is all about peaches. They are everywhere. Momoko’s hair ribbons make the shape of a peach, her boob window also makes the shape of a peach, and she has a peach logo on her headband and her sword. If I was going to find out more about peaches, this was clearly the place to go. Join me as we dive headfirst into the peach!
What happened?
Momoko was raised by an elderly couple, she calls her grandparents. However, they found her as a baby inside a giant peach that washed down the river. She grew up to be a strong and independent woman thanks to the training and guidance of three animal gods that had been by her side her entire life. So, when Oni attacked her village, she stepped up and fought back. Amazingly, she won. That caught the attention of the heavens who recruited her to help them stop the Oni from collecting all the legendary peach fragments.
Accompanied by the animal gods, Samuragi, Inugami, and Kijigami, and the Celestial Maiden Squad, Momoko travels across Japan tracking down the missing Peach fragments. Of course, the Oni are also on the hunt and it’s often a race and a battle to claim them. Momoko strikes up a rivalry with Onihime, the demon princess. All the while, Momoko is also on the hunt for clues to her past. There’s a lot to find!
What did you think?
This was a fun and easy-going series. There weren’t any real stakes and the enemies often seemed to come together to do fun things as a group, which was nice, but took away any real threat from them. The season suffered from a slow middle which dragged when I was watching an episode or two a night, so it would have been far more frustrating watching it weekly. There wasn’t anything glaringly wrong with it and at the same time, nothing really blew me away. It was just an easy season to watch.
What was your favourite moment?
It’s a coin flip between the beach episode and the hot springs episode. Both were the highlights of the series and ironically bookended the saggy middle. I think I’ve got to go with the hot spring episode purely because of the joke that pulled it all together. The goddess, Sumeragi Tennyo had come with them to the hot spring and was asking Kushinada if she looked good. When Kushinada said she did, Sumeragi Tennyo asked her how old she looked. It was tense as Kushinada tried to dodge that trap.
Then, when they got out of the hot spring, all the girls’ panties had been stolen. Well, all but Sumeragi Tennyo’s. The culprit had taken what he perceived to be the panties of the young girls to give to an Oni that was terrorising the region. Sumeragi Tennyo was not happy that he decided her panties looked old! Anyhow, they set a trap for the Oni with their panties and Semeragi Tennyo slipped hers in too. The Oni then got power from eating the panties, however, it was all undone when he ate Suermagi Tennyo’s. It was ridiculous and hilarious.
What was your least favourite moment?
This is definitely going to be from the saggy middle. There was an episode where Momoko, Samuragi, Inugami, and Kijigami were arguing and all ended up going their own way. They eventually came back together to win the day, but the whole thing felt forced and as a result lacked any sort of impact. The group were fine the episode before and back to normal the next episode, so this was basically a waste of time.
Who was your favourite character?
I want to say Kaguya, the scientist from the moon, but she never got enough time to shine. Momoko and Onihime were both a lot of fun too, but the one character that always made me laugh was Kushinada. She was Sumeragi Tennyo’s assistant and was always looking for a way to sacrifice herself for the good of everyone else. Of course, each time it felt unnecessary but that was part of the joke. She reminded me of Darkness from KonoSuba.
Who was your least favourite Character?
That would have to be Youki. He was one of the stronger Oni who used fog to attack his opponents. He was the one behind the episode where everyone fell out so I blame him entirely for that poor part of the season. Ultimately, he was completely ineffective and just took time away from the other characters.
Would you like some more?
This was fine for a twelve-episode season, and even though there were some unanswered questions, I don’t feel the need to have them answered. Certainly not with another season. It was fun and I don’t regret watching it, but this was more than enough. That’s enough peaches for now.
What have you learnt?
I think there was more than enough story to fill all twelve episodes without having to resort to the usual mid-season filler episodes. There was an idol episode too that made almost no sense in the context of the overall story. I think it can work with a show like Heaven’s Lost Property which is built around trope-heavy episodes.
This series didn’t commit enough in either direction. It’s a shame because when it went hard, the episodes were great. When there were fights, they were usually quite exciting. When it focused on goofy stuff like beach episodes, they were excellent. It just struggled to pull the two together and that resulted in some episodes that ended up feeling a bit meh! I think it’s better to pick a direction and commit to it. At least everyone knows what they are getting then.
