Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 15) – Afar

What happened?

Rudeus received a letter from Paul, his father, telling him about their plans to rescue his mother. They will be heading into a dangerous part of the world and as such are sending Norn and Aisha to stay with him. Apparently, they will be escorted by someone Rudeus knows, although Paul is keeping their identity a secret. Rudeus marvels at the idea of being able to offer his family a safe and comfortable place to live. He even wonders if his parents will move in with them too. He’s come a long way from his NEET days in his former life. Anyhow, he better run the idea past Sylphie first. After dinner, Sylphie attempts to teach Rudeus healing magic, but he seems to have no affinity for it.

The next day, Rudeus is helping Nanahoshi with her summoning magic. She’s prepared a circle and wants him to use it to summon a small item from their home world. However, when he feeds it magic, it short-circuits. Nanahoshi is disappointed, however, as soon as Rudeus leaves, he hears her scream. By the time he gets back inside, she’s thrown things everywhere and is punching the wall. She’s snapped. He carries her, looking for help and finds Zanoba who takes over. He carries her back to Rudeus’ home so that they can look after her. While she’s recovering, Rudeus gets Zanoba, Cliff, and Elinalise to help him work out the problem. Luckily, the magical doll Zanoba is studying offers them a solution – overlapping magical circles.

They put some ideas together and showed Nanahoshi. She’s delighted. It doesn’t solve the problem exactly, but it opens up an entirely new way of thinking about it. Together with Cliff and Rudeus’ help, Nanahoshi creates a new circle. Rudeus powers it up and summons a plastic drinks bottle. Nanahoshi is delighted. They’ve made a huge step towards discovering how to send her home.

What did you think?

I’ve seen some criticism that the first three episodes of the latest season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime have been very slow. I can’t argue with that, and I think it’s fair to lay the same criticism against Mushoku Tensei II – part 2. I’m still enjoying the world-building in both shows, however, both could do with a bit of an injection of action. That said, this was definitely the best episode so far and it did a great job of showing how much Nanahoshi has put herself through. I think it might have been interesting to see more of her time after she arrived, especially as her experience has been wildly different to Rudeus’. She was summoned whereas he was reincarnated.

Now, as soon as Paul mentioned that someone Rudeus knew was bringing Norn and Aisha to stay with him, I knew it would be Ruijerd. And seeing him after the credits was a breath of fresh air. However, having just brought two children to stay with Rudeus so that they are out of harm’s way doesn’t fill me with optimism for the future. We’ve gone from an episode of Scooby Doo to a wedding to babysitting his little sisters. At this stage, which is after the first half of this season which was almost entirely in a school setting, I am craving some adventure. I miss the Demon Continent so badly it hurts. There has been lots of development and growth from the characters, but that didn’t need to happen in such a mundane location. It’s got to be about time for something unexpected like another teleportation disaster or something similar.
