What happened?

The city lies within a mountain range and is only accessible by a couple of well-guarded gates. Security is tighter than normal as there have been sightings of someone called Dead End. Well, it turns out that it is one of the many names that people use to describe Ruijerd. In order to enter the city, Rudeus disguises Ruijerd as a Migurd by making his hair blue.

The city is incredible. Eris and Rudeus are like tourists staring at everything and unable to contain their excitement. However, Eris is worried about Ghislaine and her grandfather. But then, this is the adventure she’s been dreaming about. It’s not going to last long though if they don’t earn some money. Rudeus decides to join an adventurers’ guild and take some jobs. It’s also part of his plan to restore the standing of the Superd.

As they are F ranked adventurers they can only take low-level quests such as searching for lost pets. The money they can earn will barely pay for their living expenses. That night, Rudeus is visited by the Human-God who offers him some more advice – take the missing cat quest and all will be right. They take it and stumble upon a group of adventurers who kidnap pets and then wait for the rewards to be posted. Ruijerd is prepared to kill them all, but Rudeus has a plan.

What did you think?

I was not expecting anything like this when I started watching Mushoku Tensei, but I am so glad that the story has taken this route. It’s turning into a fantasy epic and I am here for that. They have a fantastic mix of characters with varying styles and beliefs which means that there is no chance that it will get even remotely boring, not that it was heading in that direction.

On top of that, the change in scenery is fantastic. We arrived in this world looking at medieval fantasy with a classic European feel which is fine, but now that we’ve arrived in the Demon Continent, it’s able to cut loose and give us a city like this. The looks on Eris and Rudeus’ face as they walked around was pretty much how my face looked. Spectacular!

What have you learnt?

My first thought is that I don’t want this series to end and as the second season is starting in a matter of days, I don’t have too much to worry about. One of the main reasons that I’m loving this series is the characters. I think they’ve found a fantastic balance with Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd. They all seem to have their ideas on how things should work and they often don’t align, which is to be expected.

It’s amazing because it creates conflict between the main characters. Given how much internal conflict Rudeus is going through and then the issues that affect them as a group, there’s always something to consider. Everything they do and say has the potential to tip the balance and leave them frustrated and fighting within. Conflict is great. It’s what drives a story and Mushoku Tensei has it in spades.
