Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 21) – Turning Point 2

Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Title

Rudeus’ search for his mother and Sylphiette takes the party across the mountains and into dragon territory. Ruijerd tried to explain to Eris why it wasn’t a good idea to hunt a red dragon, although that’s the least of their worries!

What happened?

They were in high spirits after successfully rescuing Lilia and Aisha from Pax. Even a trek across the mountain range couldn’t dampen the mood. If anything, it just made things worse as Eris spotted some red dragons flying overhead. She told Rudeus and Ruijerd that she hoped to hunt one. No doubt, she was feeling extra confident after Ruijerd officially recognised her as a warrior. Her fighting skills had improved to no end.

Everything seemed to be going well, but then Ruijerd and Eris froze, their eyes locked on something in the distance. Rudeus tried to ask them what was going on but they wouldn’t or couldn’t answer. He turned his gaze to match theirs and watched as a man and girl in a mask walked towards them. They continued past them without even looking up, but the tension became unbearable.

Ruijerd ordered Rudeus to remain still, but that just made things worse. Their oxen gripped by terror bolted and threw itself off the side of the mountain. The man turned back towards them and asked if that was Ruijerd’s voice. He then recognized Eris too, however, Rudeus remained unknown to him. Rudeus continued to push his luck, asking him questions about the mana disaster.

He then let it slip that he saw Hitogami in his dreams which sent Orsted wild. He charged without warning. Only Ruijerd’s quick reflexes saved Rudeus. However, he was no match for Orsted and was quickly incapacitated. Eris was next to jump to Rudeus’ aid, but she was tossed aside like a ragdoll. Orsted injured Rudeus, but it wasn’t enough to stop him from fighting back. Maybe, it would have been better to play dead!

What did you think?

I think that this episode was not even close to the regular twenty-four minutes. It said twenty-four minutes on the in-app timer, but I don’t believe that for a second. This was five minutes long at best. I’m pretty sure I can’t go without breathing for any longer so it had to be. Seriously though, this was an incredible episode and not just because of the action. There was a lot of subtle details revealed throughout and I loved it for that.

It’s fairly well known that I love making theories based on what I’m watching. This sort of storytelling is incredibly engaging, especially if you can get the audience to join in. Having come up with a number of theories, they will stick around to see if they come true. It doesn’t have to be straight away either. A few little crumbs in all it takes to keep us merrily following the trail, making more theories, and becoming more and more invested in the story. This episode was a masterclass in that respect.

What have you learnt?

And now for the fun part! The most fascinating thing in this episode was Orsted, however, it wasn’t how strong he was or determined he was to kill Rudeus once he found out he knew Hitogami, although that was interesting. He said that he knew Ruijerd and Eris, but also that they hadn’t met yet. He commented on their fighting abilities, noting that Eris was much stronger this time. Hang on, he said he hadn’t met them yet…

I’m getting a sense for time travel here or even something like Groundhog Day. The real kicker was when Rudeus told him that he was Paul’s son, but Orsted believed that Paul only had two daughters. The fact that Orsted had no idea who Rudeus was should have been enough for him to want to kill him. It was enough for him to ask about Hitogami so I guess that makes sense since there is some sort of connection between the two of them as hinted in Rudeus’ dream.

Orsted also didn’t know anything about the mana disaster and that seemed to trouble him. Assuming he has been repeating some period of time in which he has got to know everyone and everything in this world, an event or a person that was new would be quite significant. It’s like Neo in the Matrix and the cycles of time. This series just got a lot more complicated and interesting. I can’t wait to find out more about Nanahoshi. Could she be from another world, too?

    • Yeah, Rudy still thinks he can talk his way out of anything. Wonder if he’ll have learnt his lesson after this one!?
