Ghislaine gives Rudeus a letter from his father explaining what’s going on. He has found Rudeus a job, but it will be for five years and he cannot see Sylph during that time. Seems extreme, but so is the job!

What happened?
The job is working for his father’s cousin… well, more specifically, it’s working for his father’s cousin’s daughter Eris. Rudeus has been hired to teach her reading, writing, arithmetic, and magic. Ghislaine wishes to be tutored too and in exchange, she will continue Rudeus’ sword training and since Ghislaine is a Sword King, he couldn’t ask for anyone better.
Rudeus is taken to meet Eris, although Philip doesn’t have high hopes for Rudeus. You see his daughter is quite strong-willed and doesn’t seem to take too well to tutors, especially one that is younger than her. After an intense first meeting, Rudeus returns to the meeting room where Philip expects him to run away. Rudeus decides to stay which is further than any tutor has gotten before. He also has a plan to win Eris over.
During the night, Rudeus wakes inside a wooden box with his hands bound. He climbs out and finds Eris in another box. He shows her how easy it would be to escape if she could use magic, but instead, she starts yelling and pounding on the door. A rough-looking man enters and kicks Eris across the room. She screams for help so he stomps on her head, smashing her teeth to pieces. Rudeus’ plan appears to have gone wrong!
What did you think?
Paul’s letter to Rudeus was hilarious, especially with his inability to realise he’s over-sharing, especially with his seven-year-old son! Even better was Ghislaine’s response that Rudeus should send the letter to Zenith, which he agreed to. Now, let’s talk about Eris. Well, she is certainly a massive pain in the ass, but she developed a little as the episode went on, especially at the end when she agreed to let Rudeus be her tutor.
The kidnapping was brutal and I was a little surprised at how calm Rudeus was after watching that guy stamp on Eris’ head, especially with broken teeth all over the floor. However, his reaction to the guy that Ghislaine sliced up was more along the lines of what I was expecting. Let’s just get this out of the way now, Ghislaine is awesome! Anyhow, this was a great episode. It was tense and exciting and still managed to tell us so much about the characters and the world.
What have you learnt?
I loved the way that Rudeus has developed his magic and it almost feels like he’s taken inspiration from other anime and manga. His movement felt very similar to Bakugo from My Hero Academia. It was also good that while he was pretty amazing, he wasn’t unstoppable. He still needed Ghislaine to save him and Eris. I like this development as it gives him room to grow, but it also showed Eris what kind of a person he is.
He may have yelled “money can’t buy ‘deres”, but it was his decision to not turn her in for more money than he could have ever needed. There were a lot of great moments for Rudeus. His reaction to the dead body was believable and certainly has the potential to play on his mind going forward. However, the realisation that at the age of seven in his new life, he had just been hired for his first-ever job was amazing!
