My Hero Academia (Episode 69) – An Unpleasant Talk

My Hero Academia 4 Title

Nighteye has called together a group of heroes to work on the Overhaul case and he has some staggering news to drop on them. For their part in things to date, Midoriya, Uraraka, Tsuyu, and Kirishima have been invited too!

What did you watch?

This is episode 69 of My Hero Academia and it looks like things are coming together, well, all of the heroes are coming together at least. Now, they’ve just got to discuss what they’re going to do about it! So, let’s just get on with it and as usual, there will be spoilers.

My Hero Academia 4 Episode 69 Midoriya Tsuyu Uraraka and Kirishima

What happened?

The episode opened with a fairly entertaining sequence where Midoriya, Tsuyu, Uraraka, and Kirishima all left to go to their internship. Ironically, they all appeared to be going in the same direction. There were even several other heroes on the train with them. The further they went the weirded it became that they were all still together. I’ll admit, I’m a little surprised the no one said anything, especially Uraraka, but it made for a humorous beginning. Midoriya’s face, when they all went to Nighteye’s office, was great.

Things changed pretty quickly once everyone had arrived. Bubble Girl began the briefing by telling everyone about Overhaul and his group. There were various interruptions and several questions as to why there were a bunch of high school kids there, but they pressed on. Basically, it would appear that Overhaul has developed quirk cancelling bullets and is using his daughter, Eri’s blood in the process…

What did you think?

All right, so I may have glossed over the events on the meeting and given you the short form, proving that meetings don’t need to take that long… I’m looking at you every meeting I’ve ever been to… But, I don’t want you to think that this meeting was necessarily overblown. There were a lot of great moments that I will get to in more detail in a moment. In short, it wasn’t the message that was the highlight for this episode, as shocking as it is, but the reactions of the people at the meetings.

What was your favourite moment?

Following the meeting, Midoriya and Mirio were understandably shaken. They had a chance to save Eri and, whether it was the right thing to do or not, the guilt they felt for leaving her in that situation is weighing on them. Then, Eraserhead stepped in and told them that he was planning on suspending their internships when he found out what had happened, but also realised that had he done that, Midoriya would have gone rogue. It was then that Eraserhead offered Midoriya and Mirio some advice in the idea that their brief interaction with Eri would have given her hope. It wasn’t a complete disaster. I thought it was a nice moment between Aizawa and Midoriya. He’s always been my favourite teacher and this just cemented that.

What was your least favourite moment?

As I said earlier, it was the reactions in the meeting that made it enjoyable for me and this was possibly the best one. It’s my least favourite moment because of the implications and the pressure that just dropped on Mirio and Midoriya’s heads. Finding out the Overhaul was using his daughter, Eri to manufacture quirk cancelling bullets hit them like a steam train. That resulted in this fabulous image of the two of them feeling as if the rest of the world had vanished and that they alone shouldered the burden of what happened. It certainly didn’t help that Rock Lock was prepared to pile on top, but it wouldn’t have mattered. I don’t think they could have felt any lower.

Who was your favourite character?

He’s got candies for the students and fist full of whoop-ass for the villains. Fat Gum! I love Fat Gum and the energy and enthusiasm he brings to everything. When I first saw him in the manga, I was sure he was going to be another throwaway hero, but this guy is the best. He definitely has a similar attitude to All Might with his determined attitude. I can’t wait for him to really show us what he can do…

Who was your least favourite character?

So, how Overhaul’s quirk works has finally been revealed and it’s a monstrous ability. He can break anything down to the cellular level and he can also put it back together again. This was revealed with the group of villains that had a run-in with Overhaul. He brutally murdered them all and then put them back together again, with some of them gaining better health as a result. That said, the idea that he is submitting his own daughter to that, let alone any child is insane. This series is getting darker and I love it for it. This horrifying image of Eri trapped within Overhaul’s beak pretty much sums up the tone right now.

Would you like some more?

Yes, yes, yes! So far, this season has been fairly slow. There have been moments that took way to long to animate and should never have been an entire episode, but it is all going to be worth it. Once this behemoth starts moving, there are going to be very few chances to stop to breathe. Overhaul has been set up as a serious villain and with Shigaraki alongside him, it’s only going to get worse. I’m hoping that the next episode will take off the breaks and set this arc free. I can’t wait!
