What happened?
When the Demon God first attacked the continent, it destroyed cities and villages with ease. The people were left defeated. They had accepted their fate. That was until the Saint of the Single Flower appeared. With her tremendous powers, she drove the Demon God back to the Land of Howling Demons where it was defeated. She warned the people that the Demon God would resurrect one day, but six heroes would be chosen to defend the world. The Braves would bear the mark of the flower and share her powers. So far, that has happened twice already, but another time is upon the world.
Adlet Mayer believes that he is the strongest man in the world. He’s trained his entire life just to fight the Demon God and since there’s been an increase in fiend sightings, he believes that the Demon God will revive very soon. So that he can be selected as a Brave he has travelled to Piena hoping to prove his worth to the gods. However, all he manages to do is upset the King and find himself thrown in jail indefinitely. Many days later, the sky turns red and people hear terrible voices in their heads. The Demon God has returned. Amazingly, Adlet was selected as one of the Six Braves along with Princess Nashentania of Penia. Together they ride to the place where the Braves are said to meet before attempting to face the Demon God.
What did you think?
I first watched Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers- back in 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve been meaning to go back and see how it worked for ages. Now, it’s finally happening. It wasn’t touched upon in the first episode but this soon becomes a fascinating mystery. I’d almost say it’s more mystery than fantasy, but both elements are heavily at play. So, knowing what I know about the outcome of this story, my goal with this rewatch is to find the clues that should tell us who did what. I want to see if it is possible to solve the mystery before it is revealed in the show. That means there will be spoilers and since it’s an important part of the story, I would recommend watching it before reading on. Well, there’s nothing to spoil yet, but in future episodes, there will be.
One thing I loved about this series was the setting and character designs. They’ve chosen an Aztec/ Inca/Mayan sort of world with temples and ornate costumes. It really brings this story to life and makes it stand out from the standard European medieval feel of most fantasy stories. I also feel like I need to point out that Adlet is not someone you instantly like. At least, I didn’t. He’s boastful and brash. He strolled into the tournament without a care for the rules. Adlet, being who he is, absolutely expected them to see him defeat the two fighters and praise him for it. His belief that he is the strongest in the world is absolute and that doesn’t make you feel like he’s someone who would become a hero. If anything, he feels more like a villain at this stage, but I think that’s intentional.
Another thing to take note of is the discussion that Adlet had with Nashentania when she was pretending to be a maid. She mentioned how some of the prominent warriors had been attacked and killed by Fiends. This is the third time the Demon God has resurrected and it would appear that it’s aware of the game now.
