There’s no time to celebrate the victory over the Orc Lord. Everyone is suddenly interested in what’s going on in the Forest of Jura. Of course, that triggers the awakening of yet another powerful enemy!
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Episodes 17-20)
Episode 17 – The Gathering
Two human nations have shown an interest in the Jura Forest Federation and sent envoys to find out whether they can trust Rimuru or not. Another Demon Lord, Carrion has also sent some of his men, but they are a little less diplomatic. Rimuru welcomes the humans and allows them to stay to get a feel for themselves whether he’s a threat or not. However, he also makes a contract with one of the groups who will become the champions that defeated the Orc Lord and Rimuru helped, of course.
Episode 18 – Evil Creeps Closer
The emissary of Demon Lord Carrion who instantly picked a fight and was soundly put in his place by Milim has a lot of regrets. He didn’t handle the situation correctly and has brought shame to himself and Lord Carrion. As he elements the situation, a couple of Majins approach with news of a way to save face and get his revenge on Milim. The ancient Calamity Class Monster Charybdis is close to awakening and if Phobio acts now, he can take control of it and use it to show Lord Carrion how powerful he is.
Episode 19 – Charybdis
Charybdis has arrived at the Jura Forest Federation with several flying Megalodons. Milim is desperate to get in on the action, but Rimuru believes it has targetted him as he has Veldora in his stomach. To that end, he makes her sit out as his team and the Flying Pegasus Knights from Dwargon attempt to bring it down. They make quick work of the Megalodons, but Charybdis is a different matter. After a day of attacking it, they’ve barely scratched it. That’s when Rimuru hears it say “Milim” and realises it was after Milim all this time…
Episode 20 – Yuuki Kagurazaka
After Milim defeated Charybdis, everything settled down and life returned to normal. However, Rimuru had a dream about Shizu and the children she was teaching. In it, Shizu begged him to save the children. So, Rimuru took a break from running the Jura Tempest Federation to become a teacher and find a way to save these children. Each of them was summoned to this world and no summon under the age of ten has lasted more than five years before the powers they inherited destroyed them. The children are running out of time.
Charybdis!
When I looked at my previous posts from the first time I watched That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, this was the point where things started to go downhill for me. I did enjoy it then and now, but it wasn’t as perfect as the episodes before it. My biggest issue with it was Charybdis, the Calamity Class Monster that had numerous Demon Lord’s terrified!
The first time we heard about Charybdis was when Tear was reporting to the Demon Lord Clayman having been spying on the Demon Lord Frey. Tear reported that Frey was not interested in Rimuru at all as all of her attention was focused on the possibility that Charybdis might be reborn. The report revealed that Frey was terrified of such a thing, and from Clayman’s look, he too was concerned.
What could be so terrifying about Charybdis that it would have two Demon Lords panicking? Clayman was so concerned that he wanted to see if he could step in and control the process. Maybe he could use a host to control Charybdis in some way. So, to that end, he employed Tear and Footman to do just that. Luckily, they found Phobio fresh from his disgraced meeting with Milim.
Phobio was perfect. He had given up on his lot as there was no way to make things right with the Demon Lord Carrion. There had to be something he could do. That was when Tear and Footman approached and twisted his desire for revenge, convincing him that becoming Charybdis would be the answer. With that much power, he could easily defeat Milim…
Charybdis was strong. There was no doubt about it. Even Rimuru’s attacks did little damage and after a day of all-out attack from the Jura Tempest Federation and the Pegasus Knights of Dwargon, they had only damaged Charybdis by thirty percent. With Charybdis’ ability to heal, they were never going to make enough of a dent to slow it down.
Rimuru attempted to analyse the situation, which is when he heard it say Milim’s name. Upon further analysis, he discovered the Phobio was the host and that he was after Milim and not him. So, Rimuru found Milim and told her she was free to attack Charybdis as it had been after her all along. Milim was delighted to be able to get in on the action.
All this time, Charybdis had been floating in the sky not really doing much other than to attack anyone that attacked it. Did it warrant the designation of Calamity Class? Surely, it should be attacking and doing more damage, but no, it just sat there. Then, it saw Milim and attacked. Of course, Milim wasn’t the least bit impressed. She nullified its attack and then destroyed it with a single attack. Game over!
The action was very entertaining despite Charybdis’ inactivity. The fights with the Megalodons were probably better, but it was fun nonetheless. My biggest issue was the other Demon Lords reaction to Charybdis or even just the possibility of Charybdis. Is there that big a difference in power between Milim and them? Either way, it didn’t live up to the terror they tried to instil at the beginning. It was fun but ultimately unsatisfying.
