That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Episodes 21-24) – Back to School!

Rimuru hopes to save Shizu’s students by allowing Superior Spirits to inhabit them. It worked for Shizu and it’s their best chance yet. There are no guarantees that a spirit will even respond to their prayers?
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Episodes 21-24)
Episode 21 – Shizu-san’s Students
Rimuru meets with Shizu’s students and with the help of Ranga and a little one on one combat gets them to acknowledge him. He promises that he will find a way to save them. His only clue so far is that Shizu was of a similar age when she was summoned. The difference was that she bonded with Ifrit. Maybe if he can find Superior Spirits to bond with the children, they could be saved. He has no leads on their location until he rescues a merchant from a Sky Dragon that is!

Episode 22 – Conquering the Labyrinth
Rimuru takes the children to the Dwelling of the Spirits in hopes of summoning Superior Spirits to inhabit them and limit their power output. They’ve found the location. Now, they just need to get through the labyrinth. Of course, after completing that they will need to defeat a magic golem… There might even be a Demon Lord. Seriously, this quest is getting out of hand. However, Rimuru finds the Queen of Spirits, Ramiris who is also a Demon Lord. She agrees to help him in the summoning, but it’s up to the spirits if they choose to answer!

Episode 23 – Saved Souls
Each of Shizu’s students stepped up before the spirits and prayed for help. The first two, Gale and Alice attracted inferior spirits, however, Rimuru had a plan. He used Devour to eat all the inferior spirits and then Denegrate to combine them into a Superior spirit. He had to do the same for Ryota, while Kenya managed to attract a real Superior spirit. Finally, it was Chloe’s turn and something strange happened. A spiritual being materialised before them, kissed Rimuru, and then flew into Chloe. Ramiris mentioned something about the future and Rimuru saw flashes of Veldora and another girl who seemed somewhat familiar. Anyhow, the kids were saved and that was all that mattered… for now!

Episode 24 – Black and the Mask
A flashback to the time that Shizu was summoned to a nation to help defeat a demon, however, she was not the only one. Many adventurers gathered, but when the information on the demon was insufficient one tried to leave. He was cut down and revealed to be a lesser demon. At least, that’s the official story. Another man spoke out. Shizu was surprised that she had not noticed his aura until now. He accused the guards of summoning the lesser demon and planned on killing everyone. Shizu stepped in and fought. This man was actually a demon himself who retreated after losing his arm when attacking Shizu’s mask. As the hero, Shizu was summoned to meet the King, but as before, not all was as it seemed.

Back to School!
The first time I watched That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime I believed that this was the weakest arc. I still do, however, there’s a lot more to this than it would first seem. One of the biggest things that I believe they got wrong was the way they structured things. There are several OVAs that I will look at next and one of them is a three-part OVA that follows Rimuru’s students on a training quest.
It sets up a lot of things that happen in the future so leaving it out of the main season was a big mistake. The school arc would have been longer, but it would have been much more satisfying. I would have removed episode 24 which was easily the best in this section and made the season 26 episodes long. Black and the Mask would have made a great movie had they expanded it a little or even a solid OVA. Because it is a flashback, it could have fit anywhere really.

The school arc pulled a lot of existing threads together such as the Magicule Golem which was originally Vesta’s project. We learnt more about the Demon Lord, Leon Cromwell and how he was a hero who fell from grace. There was talk of his obsession with summoning people from Earth and intended to summon someone in particular.
If anything, I think the whole point of the students was to bring these connections together and reveal more about the story that we will experience in the future. The most interesting thing in all of this is Chloe and the spiritual being that inhabited her. Rimuru experienced something from Veldora when he first met Chloe and did so again when the spiritual being appeared. Ramiris said it was from the future, which makes me think this series is going to get a whole lot more complicated and exciting as a result.

I’ll be the first person to say that we didn’t need a school arc in a fantasy series and I will always say that. They just seem to get shoehorned into everything, so I can see why I didn’t love this part of the series and how it brought my overall appreciation of it down. The thing is, having seen the OVAs and the first part of season two, I have a much greater understanding of what they were trying to show us.
I know the characters better and can see the connections. It also helps that I’m binge-watching it this time. Now, in past me’s defence, a series should stand on its own without having to know the future events… this must be what it’s like watching a series as a manga reader first… Anyhow, I did enjoy this part and all of it that much more this time around and I would go as far as to recommend that it’s worth doing, especially if like me were a little let down by the ending.

If nothing else, you should absolutely watch episode 24, the Shizu flashback again as there is so much in there that will become important in the OVAs and season two. On its own, it’s a fantastic episode and I could watch a lot more stories about Shizu as I mentioned in my Saturday Spinoff post from March 14, 2020.
So, what started as me deciding to catch up on season two of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime turned into me rewatching all of season one, writing up these posts and fully immersing myself in the world of slime. The world-building has always been strong and the characters are fantastic. Sure, it’s been touched by the power of friendship, but there’s a reason for that… and that’s all I’m saying for now.
