That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Episodes 25-28)
Episode 25 – Rimuru’s Busy Life
Rimuru has begun the transfer of his students to Tiss and is confident she will continue where he left off. Back in Tempest, they are preparing for delegations from Eurazania, the nation ruled by the Demon Lord, Carrion. Rimuru has sent his own team to visit with them led by Benimaru. Youm has also arrived from his travels and gets dragged into the welcome party. When the delegation arrives, they instantly pick a fight which Shion is happy to hand back. Is this how diplomatic relations are developed?
Episode 26 – Trade with the Animal Kingdom
The delegates from Eurazania were merely testing the strength of the people of Tempest and were quite satisfied with what they saw. However, Shion had started a magic bullet spell that had now grown beyond her control. Everyone was panicked, but Rimuru casually told Shion to fire it at him. She did and to everyone’s surprise, except Ranga, Rimuru devoured it with Gluttony. After a night of getting to know the delegates and watching them drink the entire stock of Brandy, they found the basis for a trade where Eurazania would give them fruit and they would supply alcohol in return. Things were looking good. Now, Rimuru had to visit with Gazel Dwargo to further their relations and explain how he beat Charybdis…
Episode 27 – Paradise, Once More
Rimuru and Gazel Dwargo discuss several things, but then the topic got to the way Rimuru defeated Charybdis. Gazel Dwargo was keen to know what magical weapon he used. When Rimuru told him it was the Demon Lord, Milim, Dorf said that Rimuru made that joke at the battle too. Rimuru swore that he was not joking and Dwargo decided to believe him. It would have been an odd thing to make up. Shuna then brought out the brandy for Dwargo and Dorf to sample and they were delighted. That’s when Rimuru let slip that he had just started importing fruit and would soon be able to make much more. They were then surprised to learn that he was getting his fruit from Eurazania. Is Rimuru a Demon Lord seducer?
Episode 28 – The Scheming Kingdom of Falmuth
Youm shows the newest member of his party, Mjurran around Tempest. She’s surprised at how advanced it is and is sure it will be a threat to another nation. Of course, she’s there as a spy for the Demon Lord Clayman, but nobody knows. Meanwhile, Rimuru prepares to say goodbye to his students for good now that they are moving on to the next grade. He has a farewell dinner with Mjollmile who warns him that his nation has become an important trade route and that won’t sit well with the Kingdom of Falmuth. As expected, the Kingdom of Falmuth has noticed this too and together with the Western Church they plan on bringing the nation of monsters back in line!
Laying the Groundwork!
This is the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and things pretty much continue from season one and the OVAs. In fact, I’d say that it’s vitally important to watch the three-part OVA, Rimuru’s Glamorous Life as a Teacher which I talked about in the post School’s Out. It seems like many of the concerns that people raised towards the end of the first season continue here, but there’s a lot more to it than it first appears.
I mentioned in an earlier post about how the end of season one would have been better had it included the three-part OVA and I still believe that especially as it ties into the events that unfold here. The thing to remember with these episodes is that we’re still in the phase where everything is being prepared for future events. If you’re paying attention, you’ll certainly have noticed them too.
One thing that pop-ups repeatedly is the Kingdom of Falmuth and how it is an important trade route for many of the Western Nations. The Great Forest of Jura was a dangerous area full of monsters and bandits and it blocked many of the nations’ trade routes, making Falmuth the only way to go. When Rimuru created the nation of Tempest, he unwittingly created a rival trade route.
To make matters worse, his nation creates superior products thanks to the amazing collection of people and monsters that he has gathered around him. Along with the wisdom that Great Sage supplies, they’ve had it relatively easy so far. The Armed Nation of Dwargon became an early ally of Rimuru so to make things easier for the two nations to trade, Rimuru began the construction of a paved road. It was a monumental feat.
Infrastructure is vitally important in modern civilisation. Why do you think the Romans are remembered for building roads and aqueducts? Part of it was to keep their enormous army busy, but a smooth straight road makes it easier and quicker for a nation to move things, whether people or cargo. Rimuru is fast-forwarding civilisation by introducing things that are considered standard to modern society.
He has introduced hot baths or onsens for example, which was something the Romans were also famous for. Much like infrastructure, hygiene was a game-changer when it came to advancements in medicine, quality of life, and mortality rates. Of course, I’m speaking as someone that grew up in a nation that was once part of the Roman Empire so it’s what I know, but many other nations made similar advancements that led them to where they are today.
So, what has this got to do with That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime? Well, much like Rimuru is laying the groundwork for his nation he’s also unwittingly setting them on the path to war. Since Rimuru was once a human, I think that clouds his judgement on this matter. He still thinks in the terms of monsters being bad, which is why he goes out of his way to show that they aren’t bad and has rules like not attacking humans because he likes them. He’s obviously forgetting that he was killed by another human in his past life.
This season has started fairly slowly, laying the foundations for the events that are to come, but it has been by no means bad. There have been a lot of funny moments and I love that we’ve spent a bit more time with the characters that really made the first season a lot of fun. That’s also quite deliberate on the part of the storyteller, but I won’t say any more for now…
