That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season Two)

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Title 1

After being reincarnated as a Slime, Rimuru went about building a nation for monsters and was incredibly successful too, but even he failed to see the warning signs of the approaching conflict. This could change everything!

What did you watch?

I originally put off watching season two of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime because of how I felt the first season ended. It lost a bit of its oomph. However, when I did decide it was time to watch it, I caught up on the OVAs first which gave the end of the first season more detail. I watched the first twelve episodes of season two and loved it so much I had to go back to the beginning to watch the whole thing again before watching the final twelve episodes. So, yeah, I guess you can get a sense of how I felt about the series… Anyhow, let’s look at the specifics!

What happened?

Rimuru’s attempts to build diplomatic relations with the surrounding nations was going very well. So well, in fact, that the Forest of Jura was looking like an important trade route. That’s great news for Rimuru, but not so great news for the Kingdom of Falmuth which was the main trade route up to this point. With the backing of the Western Holy Church, Falmuth attacked, mercilessly cutting down the citizens while Rimuru was away. They even erected two magical barriers to ensure that he wouldn’t find out and also occupied him by sending Hinata Sakaguchi, Shizu’s former student after him.

Rimuru survived and made it back to Tempest, but what he found when he got there lit a flame within him. Had he been responsible for this with his orders about how to treat humans? He certainly couldn’t shake the feeling that he was. However, there was hope for the victims of this attack. If Rimuru became a Demon Lord, there’s a small chance that he could revive them. All he needs is ten-thousand souls! Luckily, an army of twenty-thousand was approaching from Falmuth!

What did you think?

I’ve already alluded to it, but I loved this series and this season had some of the best moments yet. After watching the first cour I realised that a lot of what season one was doing was setting up events for the massive payoff in the middle of this season. It might seem like a strange idea, but regardless of how I had originally felt after finishing season one, it worked. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. Now, having seen season two, I have a much greater appreciation for season one. There is a lot of politics and meetings which will turn some viewers off, but I loved it and enjoyed every moment of it.

What was your favourite moment?

There are several great moments – some funny, some exciting, and some shocking. I want to quickly mention the scene where Veldora and Milim were fighting and Veldora, who had been watching Rimuru’s memories of his past life and reading copious amounts of manga started to unleash some very familiar fighting techniques. Hadouken. Kamehameha. It was just too funny. I also have to mention the moment that Rimuru woke after his transformation to find Shion watching over him. She had died in the attack and was a large part of what fueled Rimuru to become a Demon Lord so it was a sweet moment.

However, the sheer joy of watching Rimuru and his team fight back against the Kingdom of Falmuth was unparalleled. First, we got to see Benimaru slaughter a camp on his own, then Soei and the shadows did the same. Even Gabiru and the Dragonnewts easily defeated their target. The best of the four fights, however, was Hakurou, Gled, Gobta, and Rigur who took on the Otherworlders and the fourth camp. As amazing as that was, we then got to see Rimuru attack the main army and completely obliterate them. Amazing!

What was your least favourite moment?

That would be the prelude to my favourite moment. The Otherworlders were in Tempest causing trouble and once the barriers went up, they gained an advantage over the residences who were weakened by them. Even so, they continued to boast and brag as they attacked and ultimately killed some. Even the knights that rode in cutting down anyone in their way, man, woman, or child, continued to make out like they were so powerful. This was a brilliantly done scene as I was mad. I hated them and was counting the seconds until Rimuru returned the favour. There was no way they were going to become friends after this one!

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Episode 29 Shion

Who was your favourite character?

I love a lot of the characters in this series, but there is one that has become quite important to me and no doubt changed my experience of the show. I’m talking about Shion. She is just so much fun whether she’s having a tantrum because she wants to go with Rimuru or waiting for Clayman’s attacks to do something. Shion has a lot of heart and it’s hard not to fall for her. When she ran to save the child from the knights and then didn’t instantly show up once Rimuru arrived, I started to fear for the worst. Had she died? That was unthinkable and yet, she had. This definitely changed my view on the revival quest. Had it been someone else, I might have found it unnecessary, but since Shion was involved, they had to bring her back. It wouldn’t have been the same without her. Not for me, at least!

Who was your least favourite character?

I think my biggest disappointment with this season was that all the people from Falmuth were unilaterally evil. Sure, it made watching Rimuru destroy them that much more fun, but it would have been a little more interesting had they not all been depicted as murderers, rapists, and plunderers. Even the leadership was shown to be selfish assholes. The head knight was going to use his skill to sacrifice his men to save the king. Then, there were the Otherworlders who were all utterly despicable people. They didn’t have any saving graces. How was it possible to summon three people and all of them turned out to be diabolic fiends?

Would you like some more?

After my total immersion in the world of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, I am completely sold on the series. I love it and cannot wait for more whether it’s another season, more OVAs, or a movie… That’s right, there’s a movie coming and I can’t wait. There’s so much more to this story and I can’t wait to see where it’s going. There’s the whole thing with Hinata and the Western Holy Church who worship Luminous. Of course, we just learnt that Luminous is actually a Demon Lord… And who is Leon Cromwell trying to summon from Earth? So many questions and I want to know the answer to all of them.

What have you learnt?

I loved that this series lulled you in with a false sense of security. The first season was pretty easy for Rimuru. Sure, he fought some big scary monsters, but he never seemed out of his depth. So, when the second season started and continued with this format, you end up relaxing. Maybe a little too much, because that’s when everything went wrong and it made those scenes with the Otherworlders that much more intense.

It works in the same way the jump scare does in horror films. You see the heroes in what will most likely be a terrifying situation. The tension increases as you expect something to jump out. You know it’s coming, but it hasn’t yet. It’s impossible to relax. Then, something benign happens that gives you a little jump but you get over it because it was silly. That’s the moment the real jump scare happens, just as you relax and let your guard down. Well, Slime did the opposite and it was great.
