The Promised Neverland (Episode 11) – 140146

What did you watch?

After the last episode’s steady descent into depression and despair, this was an absolutely frantic episode. I felt like there was at least another ten minutes to go when we got to the ending song.

As before, I am going to assume that you’ve seen all the episodes prior to this one as there will be spoilers from this point on. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to spoil it, go and watch it right now. I’ll wait. Seriously, I have one episode left and it has been an intense ride. If you were to binge it, you’d probably go through the whole thing in one sitting.

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Emma and Ray

What happened?

At the end of the last episode, Emma and Ray met in the dining room on the eve of Ray’s birthday and adoption date. Emma revealed that she hadn’t given up. Well, it turns out neither had Ray, but following Norman’s adoption, Mom had increased her scrutiny of the pair.

I guess she hadn’t been paying enough attention. Norman had left a note to Emma detailing what he believed Ray was planning. We also saw the discussion Emma and Norman had while they hung laundry. It turned out Ray was planning on setting himself on fire so that the others could escape and Emma and Norman had started to tell the other children.

None of them was willing to let Ray sacrifice himself and together they had made the necessary preparations for their escape. In this episode, we saw the same scene from three different perspectives, each one revealing a little more.

First, it was Ray explaining the plan and dousing himself in lighter fuel before dropping a burning match. Then we see Mom putting the babies to sleep before hearing Emma scream. She raced into the dining hall to find it ablaze. Upon checking her tracker, she realized that Ray had set himself on fire. When the sprinklers failed to activate, Mom turned to Emma and told her to run, but she had already gone.

Mom followed the tracking device to the bathroom where she found an ear in a bucket! Emma and Ray, along with a handful of the other children made their way to the wall, having already locked up the secret room, preventing Mom from radioing for help. But not all the children were there.

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Mom and Phil

What did you think?

Honestly, this series just gets better and better. The tempo along with the music was like lightning. It was another one of those episodes where you almost forget to breathe. After each episode, I wonder how they’ll top the previous one, but they do. This really is an exceptionally well-made series and a captivating story.

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Emma and Mom fire

What was your favourite moment?

I enjoyed seeing the scene around the stroke of midnight from three different angles. Each time it revealed a little more, altering what you believed you had just seen. It looks like they have finally outsmarted Mom.

What was your least favourite moment?

I felt like the box that Sister Krone left them was a bit of an anti-climax. It looked like it was either a pair of keys, like Mom’s key or a mould for the key. They didn’t really need that to keep her out of the secret room as it looked like they broke the keys in the lock, but in reality, they could have jammed anything in there.

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Emma

Who was your favourite character?

This was Ray’s episode. Sure, Emma came through with the master plan that ultimately saved Ray, but he was willing to set himself on fire to save everyone even though he thought it was a bad idea. Emma was only a fraction behind Ray, although I’m sure she’ll get her chance to really shine next week!

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Happy Birthday Ray

Who was your least favourite character?

So they left Phil behind. This appears now to have been a massive red herring, which is really annoying. There are so many other children in the orphanage that it feels lazy that they’ve kept using him again and again for no reason. It’s possible that he will get his chance to shine, but he’s running out of time.

The Promised Neverland Episode 11 Mom almost seems impressed

Would you like some more?

I still can’t believe that Emma didn’t take everyone and by the looks of things, she wasn’t even close to taking everyone. Once again, I cannot wait for next week and at the same time, I’m gutted that it will be the last episode of the season. There has to be another. Either way, I’ll be hitting the manga once this season is over.

    • They’re not out yet!!! I’m more annoyed that they didn’t do anything with Phil after giving him all those appearances. It was as if they were building him up for something.

    • I haven’t watched this episode yet, but..
      They fed him a bento.
Or in other words, he was only used to drive th plot forwards.
And this is if my assumption of them escaping without him is true.

    • Yeah, I think my annoyance is more that they’ve used him as the child that kept interrupting things. He didn’t actually move anything along but he was always there. If he didn’t have any significance they should have mixed it up, using different children in different scenarios. He may still have a roll to play though. Will have to wait and see what happens in the next episode.

    • I wonder what he will do? He just appears next to Isabella. I wonder if he is going to be a distraction?
Some manga readers on the site I watch anime says he is going to do something important.

    • That would make me feel better and would be quite the plan if it’s to buy them time only to swoop back around and get them later.

  1. I want to know where the babies are as they don’t seem to be with the kids at the wall either. I wonder who they are taking and who they are leaving, it seems odd that it would just be Phil left behind. Though why anyone has been is something I hope they answer next episode.
Still, this episode was brilliant and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

    • Best not to think about the babies… unless Phil has done something extraordinary. There are definitely some answers that we need before the end of the season. I hope we’ll get another because there’s so much more than needs to be explored.
