This is a review of season one. It is undoubtedly a review of season one… so, Why the hell are you here, Teacher!?
Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? (Season One)
What did you watch?
In early 2019, I was having a discussion with Yomu from the Umai Yomu Anime Blog about ecchi anime. We even watched and reviewed Sankarea together, although those posts are currently offline since I moved URLs in late 2019. Anyhow, we were joking about watching ecchi anime and building a site dedicated to it. I searched for a URL that I was sure wouldn’t be available, but it was… so I bought it. We ran EcchiHunter.com for over two years before it fell to the same disaster that took this site offline for almost a month. When it came back, it was so corrupted that I needed to delete it. It may come back someday, but until then, I’ve put some of my reviews on this site. Anyhow, Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? was the first series I reviewed there so it seemed appropriate that it be the first to move over here.
What happened?
Sato is about to graduate. He’s ready to move on with his life, however, he keeps running into a particularly scary teacher known as Kojima the Demon. These are not your usual run-ins. These are awkward and inappropriate. However, it would appear that Sato’s mother likes Kojima and wants to make her part of the family. The only way to do that would be for her to marry Sato… But, she’s a teacher and he’s a student…
If only it stopped there. Sato’s best friend helped out another teacher in the past and she’s never forgotten it. Desperate to thank him for what he did, she goes out of her way to help him. However, things happen and a budding romance emerges. But wait, there’s another teacher and the student that she grew up with. They’ve known each other their entire lives. Is it still weird? How about the school nurse who is cold and emotionless who tries to connect with a student in the hopes of being more warm and endearing? That’s fine, isn’t it?
What did you think?
It may have sounded like I was being sarcastic in the description of the series and in a way I was, but it was a good way. This series is hilarious. It isn’t without its problems as it focuses entirely on relationships between students and teachers. However, it’s worth noting that this is anime and not real life so who cares? Do you get upset about people who like Beauty and the Beast? She fell in love with a large hairy monster… It makes me laugh that people can get so upset about this but if this was a show about teachers killing their students, they would have been fine with it. I loved this series. It was funny, it had sweet moments, and it was raunchy. Inappropriate at times, but fun.
What was your favourite moment?
This show is broken into a lot of smaller scenes, usually two an episode and since the episodes are only twelve minutes long, it flows quite nicely. With that in mind, you would think it would be perfectly suited for picking a best moment, however, there were a lot of very funny moments and even some sweet ones. I think I’m leaning towards the scene where Kojima was invited to a wedding at a beach resort with Sato’s family since his father couldn’t go. Of course, it was just his mother trying to further set him up. Anyhow, there was an incident with a sea snake and Sato had to suck the poison out of a fairly risky place. Once the whole situation had run its course, the two of them were cemented as a couple.
What was your least favourite moment?
Without a doubt, the oddest couple was Taka and Hazakura. They were childhood friends who were now at different stages of their lives. She was the teacher, he was the student. I liked Hazakura, she was a lot of fun, however, I think she was wasted with this storyline and the constant way they seemed to force situations where Taka would be suckling at her nipple like a baby really wasn’t that hot! I get what they were going for, but it kind of fell flat for me. They were better when they were trying to one-up one another.
Who was your favourite character?
Originally, I assumed it would be Kojima, however, on reflection it is Hazakura. As I just said, she is wild. She’s the physical education teacher so is full of energy and likes to play games. Often at other people’s expense, it must be said. However, she makes things happen. Each of the girls was great and they all had their own strengths, but I think Hazakura just managed to stand out a little bit more.
Who was your least favourite character?
So, this is an easy one. Taka was definitely the one character that I found to be annoying. He was the youngest too and while I still believe this is just anime and not real life, it was probably the one that I found the most objectionable. It was probably doubly annoying as he was in all the scenes with Harakura.
Would you like some more?
I actually would! This series was a lot of fun and while I was watching the censored version as it aired it still managed to keep me entertained. It would seem like this couldn’t go anywhere else, but with the setup and the way the series shifted focus from one couple to another, the possibilities really are endless and not just in a teacher-student scenario. I think this format could work in almost any location. Obviously, I’m sure the forbidden aspect of it is one of the reasons it was as successful as it was.
What have you learnt?
Formula often gets a bad reputation in a world that is focused on creativity. How can something be creative if it’s just following a pattern? I think you might be surprised by just how much fiction follows patterns and rules and still manages to show us something new and exciting. Romance fiction is one that is well known to have a number of binding rules that will doom the story should you break them.
This series took a fairly simple formula and did the same thing over and over with new characters and situations, it showed that it really can work. I love the idea of experimenting with that. One series I’m planning is about monsters across the universe. That story should be able to fit the standard monster tropes and formulae and still be entertaining. Just like romance, if I veer too far from the expected tropes, it could kill the story. Story formula is just another tool that writers should add to their toolkit.
