Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Episode 10) – Hometown of the Dead I

Zom 100 Bucket List of the Dead Title

Akira was settling back into life in Gunma with his parents, although he still felt like he hadn’t repaid them for the effort they put into raising him. That has to wait, however, as zombies flood the village!

What happened?

Akira spent a bit of time with some of the other survivors who made it to the village and managed to get one of them to give him dreadlocks! That’s another item off the bucket list. With his new style, he attacked the day, farming like a champion with his old man. The others were doing well, too. Shizuka had given some medical advice to one old man who cut himself with a scythe. Of course, she was soon flooded with requests for help as they all believed that she was a doctor. Kencho found a little girl and her dog who came from the cities. She was the only survivor from her family and hadn’t smiled since arriving. Kencho soon fixed that, although he also promised to slurp noodles through his butt! Beatrix was busy taking in the sights and marvelling at the water wheels that powered the electric fences that kept the village safe. It was a promising start to the day.

As the day drew to an end, Akira and Kencho spotted someone whom they used to know from university – Higurashi. He seemed not to recognise them. Well, that or he did and ran away anyhow. He had dropped out of university because he stopped attending. That was the final straw for Higurashi who gathered up his gang and put their final plan into action. Once night fell, they would open the blockade and release the zombies into the village. All so that Higurashi could finally make Akira as miserable as he was.

Akira, however, was having an evening drink with his dad and learned that he wanted to be an astronaut, although he wasn’t smart enough. He told Akira that a man has to have big dreams or he’ll waste away. He wanted to know what Akira dreamed of, but their conversation was cut short when they saw the zombies. Akira’s father told him to find his friends. He would look after his mother. Amazingly, they managed to meet up at the electric fence, but soon discovered it had been increased to a near-fatal level. They were trapped with the zombies! That’s when Higurashi and his gang caught up with them to reveal their intentions.

So, it was three months later than we expected, but we finally got to the end of the first season of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. When the series ended prematurely with the ninth episode, I was disappointed that we weren’t going to get my favourite arc in the series (there’s nothing in the next five volumes of the manga that even comes close to this). However, I was also kind of glad that we didn’t get part of it. I think with whatever issues they were having in-house, the decision to finish the final three episodes and release when they were all done was the right decision. I believe that is how the entire season should be made. I don’t see how rushing to get the next episode ready is any better than finishing one season and then working on the next one as it airs.

Anyhow, this was a great episode, although as someone who has read the manga, I did feel like some of the foreshadowing was a little heavy-handed, but I’ll get into that more in the latter episodes when stuff comes to pass. I love the scene with Akira and his father, and it’s nice to see a father in anime who is strict but also caring. You don’t have to be one or the other. As to the story, this episode basically sets up the final two episodes and the conclusion of the season. Get ready for one hell of a ride.

And one final thought before – being on the set of a zombie movie when the zombie outbreak happens is the worst sort of luck. Before you realise what’s happening it would be too late. That was brutal!

    • For sure. Although, I feel like it would have been worse had they tried to keep going and left us with big gaps between cliffhangers.
