Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Episode 12) – Hometown of the Dead III
Higurashi has given Akira a choice. Either he gets bitten by a zombie or his father will be thrown the zombies. His father tells him to stay inside, but Akira can’t just stand back and watch it happen.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Episode 12) – Hometown of the Dead III
What happened?
It’s an impossible choice and that seems to make it even more enjoyable for Higurashi. Akira’s father tells him that he doesn’t have long left anyway and there’s no way he wants to see his son die before his eyes. However, Akira isn’t about to give up. Maybe, there’s something inside the cabin that can help them. Maybe someone! Moments later, the door slides open, allowing several zombies to stagger inside. Higurashi watches with wide-eyed anticipation. And then, his dreams come true as a zombified Akira steps outside and moves towards the digger. Akira’s father is shocked, but then as Higurashi gloats, Akira leaps up and grabs him, pulling him to the ground.
Akira’s plan worked. Back in the cabin were the other survivors from the cities. One of them worked in special effects for movies and was able to make Akira look like a zombie. Another could do hair and makeup. In all, they were able to transform him completely. They hid themselves when the zombies came in and then killed them, allowing Akira to casually stagger outside and fool Higurashi. Higurashi was furious that he had been beaten. Why did things never go his way? Then, a zombie bit his leg, sealing his fate. Akira felt sorry for Higurashi who had wandered down a dark path, one that wasn’t completely unimaginable to Akira from his time in advertising.
The villagers hurried to the fence in the hopes of escaping but it was still electrified. That was when Beatrix came rolling towards them on top of the water wheel. She yelled for them to move before rolling over the fence. The villagers ran towards the top bridge which was the only way over the canyon that made the village so safe. However, Higurashi’s group had already destroyed the bridge. Luckily, Mr. Kumano heard the commotion from his tree house and had built a replacement bridge. He threw it to Akira and Kencho who held it while the others escaped. Then, as the zombies closed in they ran and jumped, swinging across the chasm. Everyone was safe, but what did Akira’s father mean when he said he didn’t have long left?
What did you think?
When I was reading the manga, I knew that this was the obvious place to end the first season. In truth, I think it’s the place to end the series. While it does continue, this is the high point for me. There were some fun moments to come, but nothing quite compares to the stories we’ve seen so far. I loved how it didn’t save Higurashi. He was too far gone to redeem, but I also liked that Akira didn’t revel in his demise. If anything he felt sorry for Higurashi because he knew that had circumstances been different, he could have easily gone that way. And that’s the truth of a lot of situations like that. One bad decision can change the entire trajectory of your life.
So, finally, we learned what was wrong with Akira’s father – haemorrhoids. Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that it’s not bad. It is. And in a world without doctors and healthcare, I’d imagine it could certainly be something that could cause considerable pain and suffering. However, in the context of this story, it was hilarious because it certainly went out of its way to make you think it was cancer or worse. This has been a great series with some unfortunate production issues, however, those who haven’t seen it can enjoy it without worrying about it. It’s certainly not your usual zombie story, but it’s a lot of fun and surprisingly insightful at times.
Also, I’m glad they managed to squeeze this moment in as it was such a relief to discover that the Kosukas from episode two survived and are busy travelling the world. What, you didn’t notice? Well, it was a single image in the end credits and looked a little like this.

Nice ????
Thanks
Wow, amazing catch with that split second Kosukas end credits scene! I think a lot of people missed that.
They had their own bonus chapter at the end of volume 6 so I was hoping to see them pop up. It’s nice to see people Akira previously encountered doing well, especially when they were nice and it looked like something terrible happened.
…it has been long enough that I wouldn’t have recognized anyone in those end credits, and I kind of assumed that most of them were people they’d meet in the next season, but now I’m very curious and wondering if I could recognize anyone else if I went back and looked more carefully… dang it! 😉
New challenge unlocked!
Ok, I have now tracked the group from the aquarium – including the girl who panicked and threw Shizuka to the shark – as well as the host manager fellow and the girl he was comforting (I was really hoping to see them doing all right, but I didn’t know it was them the first time through the credits), the sushi chef fishing in the sea, and of course I recognized the baseball players. And the neighbors that it was entirely reasonable for us to have assumed were dead.
I like it. I was actually very surprised, pleasantly so, that most of the people we met in the village didn’t end up as red shirts. Now to see so many others who are still hanging in there is good for the soul. 🙂
Yeah. It was nice to see the village come out of things all right. It’s been a very different type of zombie story. A nice change to the usual everyone is dead sort of carnage.
It’s that couple that was living below Akira’s apartment who he brought supplies for on his own supply run!!! ???? I completely forgot! I thought they were some new characters for season 2! ???? It had just been so long since I just saw last Zom 100 episodes 2 days ago! ❤️ 2:57am 29.1.2024
Yeah. When he climbed down the drainpipe past their apartment but when he came back they were gone. Glad they survived!
