She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man (Volume 2) – Groovy Graybeard
What happened?
Danblf is still coming to terms with his new appearance as he fully embraces the idea that he is now Mira. With a letter of recommendation from King Solomon, Mira is able to join a guild and jump straight to C-rank. Of course, she’s actually far stronger, but too high would raise too many suspicions. Just being known as the pupil of Danblf is causing enough grief. While in Requiem, Mira encounters a couple of zombies walking in the daylight.
However, she’s realised that they aren’t actually zombies. None have attacked anyone and their bodies are actually made of mud and plant matter, although they do have a human skeleton as the frame. No, these are golems, but who would do such a thing and why? Mira’s next goal is to enter the dungeon known as Nebrapolis where she might find Soul Howl.
In Requiem, she bumps into a child that is desperate for someone to take him to Nebrapolis so that he can see his parents in a mirror that will let him talk to the dead. Mira is already going that way, so why not? Another adventurer is concerned that Mira is going into Nebrapolis with just the child so she offers to go too. Then some more of her guild members tag along. They’ve never seen a summoner before and are worried for Mira. She’s keen to show them that there’s nothing to worry about!
What did you think?
I enjoyed this volume more than the first one. One of my concerns with the first volume was how it could follow a similar path to In the Land of Leadale which ended up being a bit of a disappointment. Well, so far it looks like it’s not going to go that way as Mira is actually on a quest to find the Nine Wise Men and not just wander around and see what happens. I also enjoyed the new characters that were introduced in this volume. I hope they stick around.
One thing that I thought was really well done was the way they used the quest to get the child, Tact to the mirror to show us more of the adventurers. So, Tact’s parents weren’t dead which meant he couldn’t contact them. Mira wanted to ensure it worked and asked if anyone else had lost a relative that they could contact to see if it worked. Zeph mentioned his sister and she appeared in the mirror. It was a sad story and showed us a lot of how hard Zeph’s life was, but that wasn’t even the true purpose.
That scene showed us what kind of a person Asval is. Young Zeph had just completed a mission with Ecarlette Carillon and rather than celebrate with the party, Asval heard his story of why he did that job and connected the dots. He raced Zeph home in the hopes of saving his sister. He did this for a kid that wasn’t even part of their guild. Of course, he then made Zeph come on this mission, knowing that he would have the chance to see his sister one last time. That guy is a real hero. I’m looking forward to the next episode and will be checking out the anime at some point too.
