Call of the Night (Volume 1) – One Sleepless Night…
What happened?
Nazuna showed Ko the joys of the night. She talked with drunk people, ran around, and did whatever she wanted. She told Ko that she helped people get to sleep and as such, she invited him back to her apartment. Once there, she told him to get into her bed. She lay down beside him and waited for him to fall asleep. Ko, who struggles to fall asleep, faked it. He planned on waiting until she fell asleep before sneaking out. However, she didn’t fall asleep. She bit his neck.
Ko jumped up and surprised Nazuna. She tried to claim it was a mosquito, but Ko wasn’t buying any of it, especially as she had blood dribbling down her chin. She revealed that she was a vampire. Did that mean Ko would become one too? Nazuna asked Ko if he made a baby every time he ate. Of course not. There are rules that need to be followed. For a human to become a vampire, they must fall in love with a vampire and then let it drink their blood.
Ko decided that he wanted to become a vampire, although he knew nothing of love. Emotions in general were hard for him. Regardless, he decided to meet up with Nazuna every night so that she could feed. He also hoped that one day he would come to love her. Nazuna showed Ko how to enjoy the night which included flying, drinking beer, and talking over a set of walkie-talkies. Was it enough to make him love her though?

What did you think?
I loved this one. It reminded me of Let the Right One In, which is a great movie so that was a good sign straight away. It was amazing how different Nazuna’s voice was. Even reading it, I heard her speak and it was fascinating. To me, she sounded confident and playful, but also a little sarcastic. It was the perfect contrast to Ko who carried the straightforward monotonic voice. They were a great combination. I can’t wait to see how Akira fits into things as she seems to be suffering in a similar manner to Ko.
There was something beautiful yet haunting about this book. I generally enjoy more action-orientated stuff, but this was amazing and had very little in the way of actual action. Most of it was conversational and even long moments of internalisation. And yet, it was captivating. It didn’t take me long to devour the entire book. Luckily, there are many more volumes in the series so I have a lot to look forward to.
Of course, there is the anime too which I will look to check out at some point, especially after how much I enjoyed this volume. Oh, and I should say one last thing before I finish this post. The artwork is fantastic. It must have been an even bigger effort with most of it taking place at night. It captured the vibe of things perfectly and I love the character designs too. Nazuna always has a fantastic expression, regardless of her mood.

She doesn’t have huge boobs. That makes it pretty unique right there. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I am really tired of big boobs. All boobs are created equal.
Haven’t read the manga, but I did watch the anime and enjoyed it. It does leave one big question open… What is love exactly? A lot of his behavior certainly seemed love-ish to me. Would love other than romantic love qualify?
All boobs ARE created equal. I think that’s my family’s motto…
I’ve read two volumes so far and am really enjoying it. I have the anime lined up to get to as well. I’d imagine, love is a particularly hard thing to quantify. Like you say, does it need to be romantic love. I wonder how the vampires know or if it just happens after a while and someone decided it was love that caused it.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
Obviously, he loves her a lot.
