Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy (Episode 9) – Blue Nail

What happened?

Yoko watched as Di-amon drank Kai Harn’s blood and then tossed her aside like a rag doll. He ran after Sean Ari, threatening to do the same. Unfortunately for him, he ran past Yoko who managed to land a well-timed kick to his face. Not his beautiful face! He kicked Yoko across the room in a fit of rage, but that was his biggest mistake. Seeing Yoko hurt was enough of a catalyst to allow Dark Schneider to take control of Lucien’s body once more. He quickly hit Di-amon with a lightning attack, one of the few things vampires are weak to!

However, Di-amon is no ordinary vampire and is able to laugh it off. He then activated his own magic, turning his eyes into powerful lasers and blasting Dark Schneider to ashes. With that out of the way, he turned his attention back to Sean Ari and Yoko. He could tell they were panicked and began to laugh meniacally. His laughter was joined by another. However, when Di-amon looked to see who it was, he was stunned to see that Dark Schneider was standing behind him. Who had he just blasted with his lasers then? Poor Johto!

Dark Schneider had messed with Di-amon’s brain when he hit him with lightning, making it impossible for him to aim. No problem, Di-amon simply began to spin, firing lasers in every direction. Soon, Dark Schneider became tired of this and knocked Di-amon across the room. Then, he destroyed the wall behind him, allowing sunlight to flood in, turning Di-amon to ashes. However, it wasn’t over as he resurrected as a bat. Dark Schneider knew how this worked so he knocked the bat to the floor and then cast Blue Nail, forcing Di-amon to obey him or die!

What did you think?

This felt like yet another step down in terms of the story and the action wasn’t much better. There’s just too much standing around laughing, pointing, and monologuing to take anything seriously. I’ve been watching episodes of Solo Leveling where the action is relentless and it still manages to tell a story. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has shown that magic fights don’t need to be boring and one-dimensional. Even a handful of attractive girls can’t save this show at the moment. I feel like they abandoned the story in an attempt to be edgy, but that’s not working either.

At the moment, I’m not sure what there is to recommend the show. For heavy metal, dark fantasy series, there’s a real lack of metal whether it’s in the form of some awesome guitar-shredding music or big swords and insane fights. I’m just not sure what to expect from the rest of the series as it’s failed to live up to any of the earlier promises it made. And, on top of that, Dark Schneider is getting more and more annoying. If he wants to be edgy, he should have obliterated Di-amon instead of standing behind him laughing. Better yet, do the laughing thing but then place one hand on Di-amon’s shoulder and boom! I really want a bit more grit from this series. So far, it’s been incredibly tame.
