Hitomi-chan is Shy With Strangers (Volume 2) – Scary on the Outside, Sweet on the Inside
What happened?
Once at school, Hitomi realises she forgot to return a book to the library, she turns suddenly on the stairs and ends up eye-ball to eye-ball with another scary-looking girl. However, she steps back, terrified of Hitomi. Once, Hitomi is gone, she swears that she will find out more about that girl. She’s never been stared down like that before. Hitomi, however, was just grateful that nothing happened as it felt like that girl was going to start a fight or something.
Sometime later, Hitomi tells Usa that she would like to take the first steps towards becoming an adult with him… She is, of course, talking about going to a cafe and drinking coffee (get your mind out of the gutter). Usa pretends to know what he’s doing, but it all went well so he managed to get away with that one.
Usa and Kaoru take Hitomi to the waterpark, however, Hitomi is a little shy. Once she gets over it, she decides they should go on the biggest ride there. Of course, Usa is afraid of heights, so it’s perfect for Kaoru. Usa and Hitomi ride down the slide together which results in Hitomi’s boobs pressing against the back of Usa’s head…
The scary girl from school spots Hitomi walking on her own and thinks it’ll be the perfect time to find out more about her, but then this guy corners her and asks to try his new pick-up line on her. She reluctantly agrees since he won’t leave her alone. Hitomi meets up with the two children she’s been playing with and joins them for baseball. After hitting the ball out of the park, Hitomi runs to get it and stumbled in the middle of the scary girl surrounded by guys. She’s worried she may have walked into the middle of something. The guys take one look at her, carrying a baseball bat and run for their lives.
What did you think?
The second volume of Hitomi-chan is Shy with Strangers was even better than the first. There are a lot of smaller chapters which equate to scenes in their lives and every one of them was excellent. I can’t think of a single moment that didn’t make me laugh. That said, Hitomi is absolutely precious and I loved the way her big brother was looking out for her. He teased her relentlessly, but he could tell what an impact Usa has had on her life and that made him happy.
The best thing about this volume was the other scary girl and how that thread united the vignettes together. The cafe they went to was owned by the scary girl’s big sister, the way Hitomi saved the scary girl from the creepy guys, and then they were rewarded by the scary girl at the cafe without their knowing. They were small and fairly insignificant moments, but I liked that it pulled them all together.
The running gag for this series is still funny. Bring me more!
