Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon Volume 1 Cover

Light was massively out of his depths being a part of the Concord of the Tribes, but they needed a member from each of the nine tribes to push the message of unity. Well, that’s what Light thought until they tried to kill him!

Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Party Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to an Infinite Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out for Revenge (Volume 1) – Light at the End of the Dungeon!

What happened?

The Concord of Tribes had come to the Abyss, the world’s biggest and most dangerous dungeon. If Light had been on his own, he wouldn’t have lasted more than a couple of seconds given his paltry level. However, that was to be expected of a human – the weakest of the nine tribes. Luckily, the others were all much higher levels. They kept him safe, although he wasn’t sure what he really brought to the group. That was about to change. It was revealed to Light that he was selected to join the Concord because of his gift. They needed to see if he would become the “Master”. He had not, so it was time to cut him loose… literally!

Light tried to flee, but he was no match for any of them. He crawled across the ground, bloody and bruised, as the others mocked him. The beastman, Garou had been chosen to finish Light off, however, he played with him for too long. Just as he closed in for the kill, Light accidentally activated a teleportation trap and disappeared. They would have preferred to have confirmed the kill themselves, but there was no way that Light could survive anywhere in the dungeon alone, and he likely went deeper.

Light was relieved to have escaped from Garou and the others, however, that relief was short-lived as a level 1,000 Serpent Hellhound appeared. Given that Light was only level fifteen, he really didn’t expect to live. However, he hadn’t given up just yet. He activated his gift – the Unlimited Gacha. All previous attempts to use it had resulted in nothing of use. Previously, he had summoned mouldy bread or bent spoons. Not this time. A blinding light filled the room and then a soothing voice spoke to Light. When he could finally see, the Serpent Hellhound had been sliced to ribbons and his wounds healed. He had pulled a Super Ultra Rare summons – Mei, the Ever-Seeking Maid. She was level 9,999, and was ready to help him in any way she could!

What did you think?

The synopsis above only covered the first third of the volume, but I felt it was important to lay things out, especially as I’m certain there were lots of details that will become important. However, before we discuss those, let’s talk about this ridiculous title. I know it’s the trend, but this is out of control. I miss short and punchy names that had a meaning that became apparent as you got through the story. Anyhow, crazily long names aside, I really enjoyed this volume and am excited to get through the other eight volumes that currently exist.

I loved how Light’s gift only really worked when he was in the lower depths of the dungeon because of the concentration of magic. Every time that he’d used it previously was on the surface where there is a very low level of magic. So, of course, they thought he was a dud. It’s fairly sinister that there is the Concord which was no doubt set up to find and eliminate problems from the human tribe before they could do any damage. I wonder if there’s a backstory to learn about there. Anyhow, rather than instantly rushing back to the surface with Mei, Light takes him time, staying in the dungeon and using his gift a lot.

By the time he’s ready to begin his quest for revenge, Light has built an army of ridiculously high-level warriors. He’s summoned countless magic items that he’s used to help enhance his own level above what anyone thought was possible. His first target is Garou, who he sends Mei to bring back to the dungeon. We’re shown once more that he is a monster who has little concern for humans as he plots to take advantage of Mei. Of course, she’s basically untouchable at her level. Then, Light reappears and laughs off every attack, including one from a level 500 summons. Light has also reached level 9,999 and he’s ready to take over the world. The big question is whether he’ll find cause to destroy it or save it. I think this is going to be a thrilling series.
