Kaiju No. 8 (Volume 12) – Let’s Do What We Love!

Hoshina was left to face Kaiju No. 12 with only Weapons No. 11 for company. There was no way either of them was going to back down, but did they have enough to defeat a numbered Kaiju alone? Live by the sword, die by the sword!
Kaiju No. 8 (Volume 12) – Let’s Do What We Love!
What happened?
Kaiju No. 12 was the enhanced version of Kaiju No. 11, who had been converted into a weapon at its request. It’s only condition was that Hoshina was the only person who could use it. Well, it seemed like they were a match made in heaven. Both stubbornly hung on, refusing to quit. Both seemed to be enjoying slicing Kaiju No. 12 up in search of its core. However, after several attacks, it seemed to adjust its battle style mimicking Hoshina. Then, just when things were looking bad, Weapons No. 11 warned Hoshina to defend.

For a brief moment, Hoshina blacked out, believing that he had lost his arm to the attack. However, he snapped back and discovered that Weapons No. 11 had blocked the attack and was already starting to get on his back about not accepting his reality. It was the one thing that was holding them back. Hoshina had trained all his life with the sword. Everyone told him to give up, but he kept going. Every time he was knocked down, he got back up and asked for more. It wasn’t that he refused to quit. The truth of the matter was that he loved it. He loved the fight. Maybe, Hoshina and Weapons No. 11 were more alike than they first realised.

After accepting Weapons No. 11’s advice, Hoshina embraced the fight. To everyone’s surprise, their combat potential rose to 84%. Then, as the fight increased, it rose again. Amazingly, it went all the way to 100%. They were completely in sync. With Weapon’s No. 11’s tail holding one sword, it gave Hoshina the chance to attempt a move he had never believed possible. They attacked, slicing and slashing with three blades. It looked like they had made an opening, but Kaiju No. 12 blocked the attack. However, that had just been a way to engaged it’s weapons as Weapons No. 12 flew over Kaiju No. 12’s head and then thrust its sword through the core. They won! Now, it was up top Mina to take out Kaiju No. 14, if it ever stopped teleporting.

What did you think?
Most of this volume was the fight between Hoshina and Kaiju No. 12, but in truth it was more like a bromance between Hoshina and Weapons No. 11. I loved the way they interacted and seemed to understand one another as if they had always worked together. At the end of the fight, Weapons No. 11 was so pumped up that he recommend that they go fight some officers too. Hoshina shot that idea down, but only because he couldn’t actually move. They were amazing together and compliment one another perfectly.

We also discovered that Hoshina’s older brother had been telling him to quit fighting with the sword because of how fast he was improving. Yeah, he was a bit of a jerk, but at least he knew it. Anyhow, the scene quickly switched to Mina fighting Kaiju No. 14 which could teleport at will. That made it almost impossible for her to hit it with her canon. As she waited for a pattern to emerge, she remembered how she started out and then quickly made a name for herself when she showed her compatibility with her canon. She also thought about Kafka and how he had failed to stay with her throughout. A little harsh, but at least he’s there now.

After finding the pattern, Mina destroyed the core of Kaiju No. 14 with one shot. That was the last of the wave of Kaiju released by Kaiju No. 9. Well, that’s what they thought. He used another Kaiju to teleport to Kaiju No. 14’s location – his real target was Mina. Everyone raced to get to her aid, but then something else happened. Daikaiju began to fall from the sky, blocking every path to Mina. This volume was absolutely epic and sets up some insanely tense situations for the next volume. I can’t wait to see what happens next. Luckily, I already have that volume so, that’s what I’m doing now.
