Kaiju No. 8 (Volume 10) – The Second Wave!
Despite being put under incredible pressure, the JAKDF managed to neutralize all of the targets. Then, a new reading appeared – a fortitude 9 Daikaiju appeared before Narumi. However, it wasn’t the only one. There were Daikaiju appearing everywhere!
Kaiju No. 8 (Volume 10) – The Second Wave!
What happened?
Once Weapon No. 10 and Hoshina got on the same page, they quickly defeated the Kaiju. Surprisingly, the more they bickered and argued, the higher their combat potential climbed. It left everyone confused, but it was working so who cared? Meanwhile, a group of giant Kaiju appeared. Kafka offered to take them on, but his request was refused. Kaiju No. 9 would sense his presence as soon as he transformed so it was best to keep their trump card hidden. Luckily, they didn’t have to worry about anything as Mina attacked from twenty kilometres away! Using the new Anti-Kaiju Giant Class Railgun designed specifically for her, she was able to blow them away without having to leave the base.
Then, something new happened. A fortitude 9.0 Daikaiju appeared before Gen Narumi. He realised that they were going after him. However, another appeared before Kikoru. Then another and another. In all there were five Daikiaju all with fortitudes over 9, making them all named kaiju. Narumi was up against Kaiju No. 11 – the one last seen in the sea devouring fish. Hoshina was up against Kaiju No. 12 and Kikoru found herself standing before Kaiju No. 15, a humanoid Kaiju that seemed to resemble her… There were two more, each in another location.
Kikoru launched into an attack against Kaiju No. 15 but its power was incredible. It sent Kikoru flying and then created an axe of its own to fight her with. However, Kikoru’s combat potential began to rise as she unleashed Weapon No. 4’s power. Soon, she was showing levels beyond anything imaginable for a rookie. She was showing Captain levels, but even so, she still couldn’t keep up with Kaiju No. 15. However, she wasn’t alone. Narumi was struggling against Kaiju No. 11 and Hoshina was on the defensive. It would appear that each of the Daikaiju had been created specifically to fight their targets. The first wave had been designed to separate them from one another. The second wave pitted the Daikaiju against their perfect opponent!

Excellent! This is exactly what this series has been building towards and it has been spectacular. We already know that Kaiju No. 9 is cleverer than the average Kaiju. We saw him playing online chess as a part of his attempts to understand humanity and that strategic interest is showing now. As soon as I saw that Kikoru’s opponent looked similar to her, I knew what had happened. Each of humanity’s strongest warriors are up against their weakness and that was all planned by Kaiju No. 9. If they hope to win, there needs to be something that tips the balance, enabling them to switch opponents. Will that be Kaiju No. 8? Well, that’s probably exactly what Kaiju No. 9 is waiting for.
This series has been fantastic and after ten volumes it’s just getting better and better. The characters are great. They’ve been developed well and have built a great rapport with one another. Of course, we’ve not seen everything that is going on in this battle as Reno and Furuhashi have been notably absent. Maybe, they will be the unknown element that Kaiju No. 9 has been able to predict, as Reno’s advancement has been relatively recent. I’m incredibly excited about what happens next and can’t wait to see how this series progresses. It’s definitely one of my favourite Shounen series right now.
Also, it’s worth noting that Kafka was barely featured in this volume and there was no sight of Kaiju No. 8. It says something if a series can hold the central character out of an entire volume and still be as good as any other volume.
