Gleipnir (Volume 3) – The Power to Force People to Keep Secrets!

What happened?

Once they left the hiking trails, Clair told Shiuchi that anyone they encounter from here on can be assumed to be a monster too. If he smells anything he’s to change instantly so that she can get inside her. Unlike in the town, it’s their true identity that they need to keep a secret and not the fact that Shuichi is a monster. She also plans to attack first and catch them by surprise, although Shuichi is a little concerned about that approach. Soon enough, Shuichi smells a monster so they prepare to approach it. However, when they get there, they quickly realise that they may have made a mistake. The monster is huge with blades for arms. On top of that, it’s not interested in coins, it just wants to fight!

Shuichi charges in and hits the monster, but it barely moves. It attacks back, sending them both flying. Clair pulls the gun and shoots. It breaks one of the monster’s blades but that’s all. He transforms and thanks them for taking this seriously. Ever since he became a monster, he’s been searching for someone who might allow him to test his newfound strength. Then, he transforms again, unleashing a massive attack. However, Clair and Shuichi got away. The monster follows them and is then grabbed by Shuichi. His plan was for Clair to run, but she stepped out from behind a tree holding the gun. The monster realised that she was serious and surrendered. He offers to help them providing they can help him find strong opponents. Soon enough, they are found by another monster who plans on blackmailing them. Sanbe quickly cuts him down, giving Clair a chance to contact some other monsters when she finds his phone.

What did you think?

After discovering the world they had become a part of, it was awesome seeing Clair and Shuichi charge headfirst into their new reality. I liked that it wasn’t as easy as they hoped it would be, but I’m also glad that they were able to succeed, especially as both Shuichi and Clair had a part to play in it. We’ve seen Shuichi as the timid guy who needs a person inside him to make up for his weaknesses, but he’s already starting to grow thanks to his connection to Clair. She’s an absolute force of nature. I love how calm and collected she is. She’s got nothing to lose so she is prepared to go all in on every situation.

We also got to meet the group of collectors that they join with for a period of time led by Sayaka who uses her power to ensure that no one can betray the group. It’s an interesting power because it works based on your feelings. If you think you’ve betrayed the group, your head falls off. I wonder if someone who had no feelings of remorse might be immune to it. Either way, things are picking up and they’re only going to get better from here.

The volume ended with Shuichi and Chichiro (the girl with cat ears who can understand animals) being rushed to death by Subaru’s monsters. Of course, the last panel shows a destroyed Shuichi climbing to his feet, covered in blood. I can’t wait to start the next volume.
