Gleipnir (Volume 5) – We’ll Kill ‘Em All!
Shuichi and Clair find themselves on the run from another group of collectors and they appear to be hopelessly outmatched. Madoka catches them and tells them that they need to sacrifice one member or they all die!

What happened?
When Madoka finds the monster that Youta beat up, he vows to make them pay for what they did. After all, whatever happens to his guys happens to him. Clair and the others think they’ve escaped, especially after Isao made a barrier of trees to stop their pursuers. However, that’s nothing compared to the strength of Madoka, who breaks through the trees and hits Isao, assuming he was the one who hurt his friend. Youta steps up and gets knocked down too. Madoka changes back to his human form and tells them that since they hurt one of his guys, they will need to pick someone to die from their group. Clair asks if one of the two he hit dies does that count? He likes her question and decides that she will survive. He gives them some time to discuss it.
No one wants to die, however, Ikeuchi thinks they need to pick someone. He’s the only person who believes that and Clair makes a point so that he realises that by doing so, he’ll be the one who is picked. Anyhow, it might not come to that. Clair has an idea. Once Isao wakes up, she asks him to use his powers to fill the forest with Oleanders – a fairly common flower with a sinister side. He agrees and then runs off with the others while Shuicih and Clair set fire to the forest, trapping Madoka’s group inside. The poisonous fumes from the burning Oleanders quickly bring them crashing down. Clair tries to absolve Shuichi of the blame, but he runs into one of the survivors a week later and makes his decision to not be a bystander anymore.
What did you think?
This volume shows just how shrewd Clair is, and how far she’s willing to go to get what she wants. I am curious where she had the Oleander cutting hidden (must have been tucked into her swimsuit), but that’s not really important. The fact that she was ready to do something like that and knew that the abilities of the group would make that a possibility was stunning. I love Clair. She’s a fascinating character and I also love how she’s starting to rub off on Shuichi. He’s seen enough now to know that he can’t continue to be a side character. He’s got to step up and do his part too. That’s some amazing character development, considering we’ve been watching it slowly happen for five volumes now.
We also got to see a little more of Elena and the one who already collected one hundred coins, Kaito. The next volume should cover the episode of the anime that absolutely blew me away. I can’t wait. This series is already dark, but it’s about to turn things up once more. I also think that by the end of the next volume I might be stepping into new territory as the story goes beyond what the anime covered. I am so excited to see where this story goes. I watched the anime back in the summer of 2020, and the final volume of the manga came out in March 2024. It’s time. Let’s do this!
