Yogiri Takatou woke in another world. Most of his class had been granted otherworldly powers and gone off on an adventure. He sat with the remaining few as bait for a dragon. Guess it’s time for someone to die!

What did you watch?
This is the first time that I’m rethinking my decision to put the English and Japanese titles on my seasonal posts… Seriously, look at how long that title is! Anyhow, seriousness aside, which is probably the best way to approach this title since it’s an isekai parody, there needs to be a short form name for this series. I’m just going to call it Instant Death Ability from here on. Anyhow, it’s an isekai and a parody so I had to watch it. These types of shows can go either way and it’s really dependent on the viewer too, since comedy is very subjective. Right, let’s do this.

What happened?
By the time Yogiri had woken up, most of his classmates had left the bus. He was one of four who had not received a power from the Saint who summoned them to this world. With their bus under attack from a dragon, there was understandably panic. However, Yogiri didn’t seem the least bit concerned. He pulled out his handheld gaming device and returned to his game. Dannoura tried to make Yogiri understand the importance of the situation as Shinozaki was impaled by the dragon’s tail. When the dragon came back, this time targeting them, Yogiri simply told the dragon to die… it did!
They got off the bus and were met by three of their classmates who had returned to see if the dragon had killed everyone. Surprisingly, this was their second time in this world, which gave them hope that they might be able to return home. However, the three had their sights set on Dannoura, hoping to enslave her and make her their personal plaything. Yogiri didn’t like what they were saying, especially the part about killing him first. So, he told one of them to die. He did. Then, he told another to die. He did, too. The third one panicked and ended up putting on the enslavement collar they planned on using on Dannoura. Yogiri told him to walk into the forest full of monstera and to just keep going. He did!
After a bit of walking Yogiri and Dannoura arrived at a town. They were provided with some supplies, which is the custom for greeting otherworlders. However, a group of bandits targeted them once they discovered that they didn’t receive any powers from the Saint. Of course, Yogiri didn’t like that and one by one, he told them to die. And one by one, they did. Yogiri decided that their best chance of getting home was to find the Saint who summoned them, so off they went on an adventure in this strange new world!

What did you think?
This series was bonkers! Now, the problem is that it’s supposed to be, so I’m not sure exactly how to rate this. It absolutely lived up to the premise, but at the same time, it took a scattergun approach to things. Rather than focusing on one or two elements and making them interesting, they decided to throw everything at it. There were dragons, giant robots, zombies, demons, wizards, saints, knights, and classmates. Then the settings for the various adventures had almost no consistency. There was a modern city with trains and buses. There was a labyrinth tower full of traps in a medieval style. There were castles and dungeons. It was very hard to settle as everything constantly changed. There were also too many people with too many agendas. The only constant was Yogiri’s ability to kill anything with one word. Surprisingly, that stayed quite funny.

What was your favourite moment?
Surprisingly, there was a truly great moment about halfway through the series where we learned that Yogiri had always had the ability to kill anything with one word. He lived in a secret research facility deep underground and was looked after by a secret organisation. They hired a teacher to look after him and teach him how to behave in the world in the hopes that they might be able to control him. However, Asaka seemed more concerned with making his life better and teaching him the things he needed to know. She saw his powers and realised that he was not bound by the same rules as them and as such he needed to come up with his own ideas of morality.
Unfortunately, Asaka was kidnapped by another organisation while on a day off. Yogiri forced his way outside of the containment area and went to find her, killing everyone in his way. Once he found her, they returned to his home and continued. They never told us where Yogiri came from or how he got his powers. There wasn’t really a lot that they told us about any of it, but this expanded the world in a wonderfully strange way. It definitely piqued my curiosity.

What was your least favourite moment?
I don’t think there’s a particular moment that I can pick out and say that it was the worst moment. In fact, individually, the moments were all that bad. The biggest problem was that there were so many moments that varied so wildly that it made everything a bit of a mess. Confusion is rife with this series and that appears to be deliberate. Annoyingly, had they pulled back a little bit they could have still made a fun parody and had a fairly enjoyable story. As it was, there was just too much going on all the time.

Who was your favourite character?
The main pairing of Yogiri and Dannoura were probably my favourite characters. They worked well together and were a lot nicer than most of the other characters combined. There were some others that I would have liked to see more of like Ryouko Ninoiya and Ayaka Shinozaki, but they were competing for time when there was no more time to give, given how overloaded everything was. I think out of the two, I would probably say that I liked Dannoura more, but that’s because Yogiri really didn’t have too much personality. Ironically, he was deadpan all the way through. I did laugh when he told Dannoura that he killed the Demon Lord who had been frozen in time because he was too dangerous as soon as he saw him as others panicked that the barrier was breaking.

Who was your least favourite character?
It has to be Daimon Hanakawa. We met him early on as one of the three boys who planned on turning Dannoura into their sex slave. Amazingly, he kept surviving and ended up in all the worst places at the worst possible time. He was annoying, screaming and crying all the time. To give context, he reminded me of Zenitsu from Demon Slayer… And, of course, it was the same VA. Sorry, Hiro Shimono. I loved you in Peter Grill though!

Would you like some more?
This season ended with everything resolved and simultaneously unresolved. I shouldn’t have expected anything else. Yogiri learned that it might be impossible to get home, but at the same time, it might be if he collected philosopher’s stones. Then, a mysterious girl, who may or may not be the vampire saint that Yogiri killed earlier in the series called him her love and gave him one. Of course, he’s firmly attached to Dannoura now, whether he knows it or not. So, I’m a little torn. Part of me wants to find out more and part of me knows that a second season would be just as chaotic and jumbled. It was fun but also infuriating.

What have you learned?
I think comedy works best when there are moments of calm beforehand. It’s the same as horror. If all you have is outlandish moments over and over again, the jokes become hard to navigate. There needs to be some build-up before the punchline, just as there needs to be anticipation before the scare. On top of that, regardless of the genre, if there’s too much going on and too many people to follow, the audience will end up spending all their time trying to keep on top of things and won’t have the energy to engage with the important parts of the delivery. I think Instant Death Ability took things too far and made it too convoluted, which is a shame because there was some good stuff in there… if you can find them.

This one really was a wild ride, I went in just expecting your average isekai with overpowered protagonist, but yeah, you’re right to call it bonkers. And as you say, the entire anime was just trying to use its zany and unexpected nature to carry the comedy, but more variation would have helped a lot on that front. I thought it was fun, but I wouldn’t call it all that amazing as a comedy.
I think it tried to throw as many settings and situations at us as possible so that it could maybe get away with the instant kill joke. It was fine and I don’t regret watching it, but like you say, it wasn’t amazing.
I’m gonna properly watched this series’ adaptation because while it’s obviously trashy entertaining, it’s meant to be that way. However, I too felt this series didn’t reach the likes of Konosuba. But I took don’t regret watching it since it’s really making fun of itself. Just not in a memorable way and even if second season happens, I will tune in when I feel the need of a trainwreck watch.
Meanwhile, I’m pondering whether to make a mainly comedy series that’s akin to a parody after my LitRPG series which I just posted the latest chapter and unfortunately, I’ve to split up to make a first arc’s proper ending.
For sure, it’s most definitely aware of what it’s doing. I just think it went too far and ended up being a little bit of a parody of itself, if that’s possible. KonoSuba managed to focus on one aspect and then slowly bring in things like giant robots by giving them a reason to be there. Instant Death Ability just threw them in and was happy with that.
You should definitely have a go at writing something funny. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve got a short story that I loved that was very dark comedy and a novel that I’m 75% of the way through that is a Rom-Com.
