Author Journey (August 7, 2023)
I had a new toy to play with so pretty much everything took a backseat to my new tablet. I’ve been drawing, and drawing, and drawing. I did some other stuff too, but this was too much fun to put down.
Author Journey (August 7, 2023)
I’m back in the busy period with the day job so that took up some of my time and will do it again this week, especially as it’s a short week because of a public holiday. That said, I had my tablet beside me all week and would start doodling every free moment I had. At the moment, I’m just getting used to the software and the digital pen, but it’s a million years from the Wacom tablet I was trying to learn on. It’s also been an upgrade on my nighttime anime viewing, having a much larger screen than my phone. Needless to say, I’m happy with how it’s going so far.
The Weekly Recap!
Anime Goal – 12 Episodes
I’m still loving Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead and Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation, and continue to be pleased with my decision to cover them on an episodic basis. It’s always nice to talk about the current shows with other bloggers who are watching them at the same time. As well as those, I had planned on watching another ten episodes of Fairy Tail which would have taken me to episode forty-six, two episodes shy of finishing season one. Well, I couldn’t stop. And, not only that I watched nine episodes of another show. If you’ve been keeping count, that’s more than the twelve I had planned…
Manga Goal – 3 Volumes
I’ve been focused on one series for a little while and managed to read another three volumes. That series is Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. I was two volumes in when I started watching the anime and because I’ve always been ahead, I felt like I wanted to stay there. Now, I’m at volume seven and I’m pretty sure the anime isn’t going to catch up this season.
Posting Goal – 7 Posts
Last week, I wrote my Author Journey post on Monday morning whereas I normally write it on Sunday night, as I am doing right now. So that meant, if I followed the plan, I would hit my goal by writing two episode reviews, three manga reviews, and this post. Well, since I finished season one of Fairy Tail, I wrote that review as well. That’s right – eight posts.
Writing Goal – 3.5k Words
On top of the new tablet, which was very distracting, I had a busy work week and that left me exhausted by the time the evening came along. I crashed a couple of nights before I could do anything and the others I tried to go to bed early and ended up watching lots of anime. I know, I’m my own worst enemy. So, unfortunately, last week will go down as a week off. This week should be better.
Drawing Goal – Play Around With Tablet
So, I’ll just come out and say it, I have a new iPad. It’s the first one I’ve had since the first generation which was so heavy it could break your nose if you fell asleep watching something on it. My new one is the Fifth Generation Air and I have the Apple pencil to go with it. It’s beautiful and I have been playing… I have at least ten active sketches. Most are line art. One I’ve been playing with colouring it. There’s a lot to learn but my background with software should make this a slick process. Can’t wait to see what it can really do.

Aspirations for the Week!
I’m going to lose a day because of the public holiday and then only one of my kids is going to camp next week so I’m going to have plenty of distractions as well as the busiest week of the period at the day job. That said, I don’t think it’ll impact me too much… Famous last words!
Watching Anime
I have Mushoku Tensei and Zom 100 episodes to watch so that’s two. I have three more episodes of the series I started last week, which was season two of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story. After that, I’m planning on diving into the latest season of Dr. Stone. I reviewed the first two seasons episodically so this will feel a little weird just doing an episode review, so I’ll see how I go. Either way, I’ll stick with twelve episodes as my goal.
Goal: 12 Episodes
Reading Manga
I’ve got three more volumes of Zom 100 so my goal will be to read those. Then, I’m just waiting for my library to get the latest volume and the other people ahead of me on the waitlist to get through it. I find people don’t tend to hog them with the newer titles and often return them before the three-week lending period is up, otherwise, it could be a while.
Goal: 3 Books
Posts Scheduled
So, I will have two episodic reviews to write, three manga reviews, and an Author Journey. On top of those, I should finish Birdie Wing which will take me to the number seven and since that’s been going well for me, I’m going to stick with it.
Goal: 7 Posts
Writing
I definitely want to get back to writing five hundred words a day so that’s what I’m going to aim for. I need to remember that if I miss a day, I don’t have to make it up. That’s when it gets quite daunting. I remember thinking that if I did two thousand words a day on Saturday and Sunday I could make it. Ironically, that made it too hard so I did none. I’m not back at that level yet.
Goal: Continue Second Draft of RIP Tide (3.5k words minimum)
Artwork Completed
It’s the same as last week here too. I just need to play around with the software and the tablet. I need to get familiar with it and see what it can do. All the while, I’ll be drawing and drawing and drawing. I’m already a big fan of the software so I’m confident that we’re going to get along fine.
Goal: Play around with the tablet
Final Thoughts
I was looking at my tracker and I’ve reached the point where all I need to do for the next six weeks is keep up with my episode reviews and my Author Journey post. Everything else is already scheduled. Of course, I’m going to continue to read manga and watch anime so that buffer should remain which is nice. All in all, I don’t have much to complain about at the moment. I’m sure it won’t last forever, so I’m going to enjoy it while I can. Anyhow, I’ve got things to do (like playing with my tablet). Thanks for reading.
“My new one is the Fifth Generation Air and I have the Apple pencil to go with it. ”
Dang it! I wish you had said terrible things about it. I’m dying to get one myself!
What software are you using to draw? I’ve not tried to use Adobe Illustrator on iPad; my iPad is so old it would melt just thinking about it.
So far, I’m loving it. It just makes much more sense to my brain that I’m looking at my hand as I draw.
I use Clip Studio Paint which I originally got with the Wacom, but have since transferred my account to the iPad. I was reasonably reassured when I say a mangaka mention that they use it in their drawing process.
At the moment, I’m sure it has loads more features and I’m going to slowly learn how to use them all.
