Author Journey (September 25, 2023)

2023 09 25 The Otaku Author Journey

I know that I said last week that I would be thinking about the future schedule for this blog. I also said that I wouldn’t do anything until the New Year… Well, I changed my mind and the schedule starting from next week!

Author Journey (September 25, 2023)

You have to adapt if you want to survive. Now, that might be a touch heavy for a blog about anime, manga, and writing, but it’s a philosophy I generally apply to everything I do. If you’re standing still, you might as well be going backwards. So, I know I had planned on waiting until I had given myself some time to really think it over, but I was looking at the next anime season and it hit me that I was falling further and further behind. There are a lot of season twos and threes this time and many of them are shows that I want to continue or watch, but I’ve missed a season or two here and there. So, I decided that there was no time like the present and redid my schedule for quarter four of 2023.

The Weekly Recap!

Anime Goal – 3 Episodes

Last week, I finally got all caught up on Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. I have the posts scheduled and ready to go. The season two part one finale of Mushoku Tensei aired yesterday and I’m still waiting to see how many episodes of Zom 100 there will end up being. Either way, I hit the goal.

Manga Goal – 3 Volumes

I ended up losing most of the week to a real-life family event which basically impacted me from Wednesday through to Sunday. Hopefully, normal business will resume today, but who knows? Anyhow, I only managed to read one book last week.

Posting Goal – 7 Post

Early on in the week, I had the realisation that I needed to change things up for the next season and one of the deciding things was that I had a season review of two series to write up. Every time I looked at them, I felt like I had a lot more to say about the show than I could fit into a single season review. So, I started writing up episode reviews and it felt much better. I had planned on seven reviews, and that was with three manga reviews, so I was quite surprised to beat my goal. I scheduled nine posts in total.

Writing Goal – 1,000 Words

So, with all the issues from the real-life family event, I ended up doing a bit of reading in bed on my iPhone. However, it wasn’t a book or an article. No. I ended up browsing through my Google documents and read a load of my old short stories, outlines, and other weird and wonderful projects that I started. I didn’t get any writing done per se, but I have been going over which story I want to write first and it’s been hard. However, I keep coming back to the rewrite of Valiant Lineage which will be my epic fantasy series, so I’m going to start there.

Drawing Goal – 1 Sketch

Still nothing here and the state of the basement, which includes my office isn’t helping.

Aspirations for the Week!

I spent a bit of time going over my schedule for quarter four with a fine-toothed comb. I picked the shows that I want to cover. I grabbed the dates and times they air. Then, I worked them into a manageable routine. Basically, I’m going to cover seven series through quarter four. Three are older shows that I can schedule ahead and they will be published Saturday through Monday. Those are the days that I have the least amount of time on so that makes the weekends easier. Then, I’m going to cover four new shows as they air with the posts going live within five days of release. That gives people enough time to see them without me accidentally spoiling them.

My manga posts and my Author Journey post are all moving to the early afternoon. That means I’ll be able to write these posts on Monday morning instead of desperately squeezing them in on Sunday night. It’s a tiny bit more work than before, but with the way it’s set up it should make the process nicer and that should allow me more time to actually write. In theory, I should have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights where I don’t have to do anything but write.

Watching Anime

This week, I will have four episodes to watch. The twelfth episode of Mushoku Tensei, the ninth episode of Zom 100 (which might be the last???), and then two new shows that start on Friday and Saturday. So, that’s all I’m planning on doing for now.

Goal: 4 Episodes

Reading Manga

I still have a good pile of manga to get through and I’d love to be ballsy and say I’ll read one a day, but that’s most likely not going to happen. So, I’ll stick with three and see if I can manage more.

Goal: 3 Books

Posts Scheduled

I potentially have four episode reviews, a season review or two, an Author Journey and three manga reviews. That’s nine or ten posts. I’m going to remain positive that Zom 100 will get a full season and plan on nine.

Goal: 9 Posts

Writing

Let’s keep the goal small so that when I do start writing, I can easily achieve it and ride the wave. I think one of my problems is that I have so many partially written stories that I want to finish that it becomes daunting to commit to one over the others despite the fact that doing none doesn’t help either. I just have to go for it.

Goal: 1,000 words.

Artwork Completed

This one is still completely up in the air with the current state of things. I have lots of work to do on the basement still and there are not enough places to put things yet. Hopefully, that’ll change soon. IKEA may have some answers.

Goal: 1 Sketch

Final Thoughts

I saw Shield Hero season three and Dr Stone season three part two in the schedule and realised I hadn’t seen the seasons prior and that was going to keep happening if I kept the current routine going. I also realised that I prefer to avoid spoilers more than I like to binge a show. I seriously hate spoilers so I’m back to watching seasonal shows. The good thing is that I never said I would never do them again. There are also some really good ones that I am excited to be covering each week. So, this is the last week of the current schedule. Next week, this post will be out a little later than normal, and then that will become the regular time going forward. Well, until my next need to adapt… Anyhow, as always, thanks for reading.

  1. “I just have to go for it.”

FWIW, the best writing advice I ever received was “Write.” The second best was “Finish.” I’ve discovered that even if what I finish is a mess (which is, I fear, pretty much my MO), it’s still a _finished_ mess. It’s a checkbox. So, I think you’re on the right track!

    “IKEA may have some answers.”

IKEA is amazing. It’s easier to build than the old Sauder stuff I had; it looks better; and it holds up!

This coming anime season has already defeated me. I had planned to cut back a little. Just one less seasonal show. But I just can’t bear the thought of missing The Eminence in Shadow 2nd season, Goblin Slayer II, SPY x FAMILY season 2, or Dr. Stone New World Cour 2. I had wanted to review The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3, but, well, 4 seasonal shows constitute my max. I think. Unless I don’t do a throw-back series. Hmmm…

    • That’s a part of Heinlein’s rules, which I’ve been very bad at following so far.

Rule One: You Must Write. …
Rule Two: Finish What You Start. …

There are three more rules, but I’ve got to get past two first. I feel like Dug in Up where a new squirrel… story idea appears every couple of seconds and pulls my mind in other directions.

I love IKEA. I got my desk from the display area. It was reduced by 75% because of being a display piece. It looked pretty beat up, but it was all superficial and wiped away.

Yeah, I wanted to do Shield Hero and Dr Stone, but I haven’t done the preceding seasons. Settled on Eminence 2, Goblin Slayer 2, Frieren, and Ragna Crimson. Going to try to stick to my times and not push ahead with other stuff. A routine should be good for me.

What did you think?
