Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy (Episode 7) – The Demon Beast
What happened?
Kai Harn is determined to know what happened to Sean Ari, however, Dark Schneider has gotten himself all wound up about who is more attractive him or Kai Harn. Lars is getting a little frustrated with his antics, but then who isn’t? Anyhow, Kai attacks with an attack that is a mix between sword fighting and ninjutsu. Dark Schneider was sliced to pieces, however, it was just an illusion, Kai hacking up one of their orc minions. Dark Schneider attacks with a fireball and then laughs at how easily he defeated Kai. That was also an illusion. Next Dark Schneider attacks with Efreet and breaks Kai’s armour, revealing that Kai is a girl! Things are getting interesting.
Kai casts an ancient spell that starts to turn Dark Schneider’s body to stone. Since it’s an ancient magic, there’s no way to stop it without knowing which god Kai had contracted with. Maybe he could find one nearby that is on the same branch, but he doesn’t have time for that. Instead, he’s got plenty of time to mock Kai by playing up what happened between him and Sean Ari. That just made Kai mad. Now she intends to kill him rather than leave him as a stone statue for the rest of time. However, Sean Ari appears and blocks Kai’s attack.
In Kai’s anger that Sean Ari would turn against them, she mentions the god’s name they are contracted with. Bad move. Turns out Dark Schneider has a contract with a higher god and now all of Kai’s magic is useless. In a final desperate attempt to win, Kai summons a cockatrice that also has the power to turn people to stone. Can Dark Schneider defeat the cockatrice and win Kai Harn to his side?
What did you think?
Ironically, I made the joke that this series needed to turn things up to eleven in my last review. Well, this episode ended up feeling more like Spinal Tap than Metallica. There were some fun fights in this one, but once again it was mostly standing around and lecturing one another. Kai Harn was a fun character. She was obviously a girl right from the beginning, but I’ll overlook that. However, Dark Schneider’s vanity was getting a bit much and that was fueled by the fact that he thought Kai was a pretty boy.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting Sean Ari to show up and save him so that was a nice twist. I’d also really like to know how and when Kai Harn was poisoned. After the fight was over and she had been defeated along with the cockatrice, Dark Schneider carried her to a patch of grass and told her he needed to suck out the poison. He ripped off the remains of her shirt. However, the wound was much closer to her hip bone. Much closer. Then he held her legs up and dived in to heroically suck out the poison. It looked more like a graze to me, but what do I know? I got the feeling that Sean Ari wasn’t convinced either. Anyhow, I’m enjoying this series, but I was hoping it would be darker and more serious.
