What happened?

Once Jean realised that he had been reborn into another world, he began to dream of having some sort of gift or cheat. However, that was not the case. The only thing special about his was that he retained his memories. Of course, that is something. With the mind of a forty-year-old, Jean was able to apply himself. He focused on getting fitter and stronger. He master archery, sword fighting, and using a spear. As soon as he was eighteen, he left his home and travelled across the world to the Dark Continent, a strange and mysterious land that was home to an unconquerable dungeon known as the Deepest, Most Unknowable Dungeon. Jean had set his sights on being the first to defeat it!

Once they arrived there, he was tested along with all of the other hopeful adventurers. He showed remarkable promise, defeating the teacher in a mock sword fight. That earned him the change to fight against a goblin in front of everyone. The goblin was tied to a stake and only had a club to fight with, but Jean soon realised that goblins were not how they had been portrayed in the media back home. This wasn’t a weakling. It was a warrior. Jean decided that it was best to fight like a warrior. He freed the goblin and asked for it to have a sword. Jean removed his armour and prepared to attack. His slash was strong and quick, slicing into the goblin’s shoulder and cutting down to its heart. Jean learned a very important lesson in that moment as the goblin tapped him on the neck with the pommel of its sword.

In its final moments, the goblin showed Jean that fights were not flashy and there was no quick wins. The reality of this world was that fights in close quarters would likely leave both fighters injured or dead. Things had sudden gotten very real for Jean. Then, as he contemplated his life and the lesson that the goblin had taught him, a female adventurer ran up to him that she what happened and just wanted him to know that she was totally down for anal…

What did you think?

I picked up this series without knowing anything about it. It looked like a straight fantasy series, so I was a little surprised to see that it was an Isekai. However, learning that Jean had no special abilities kind of negated that fact. On top of that, I couldn’t help but notice how real everything felt. The lesson taught to Jean by the goblin was reinforced later in the book as a group of experienced adventurers took a group of rookies (Jean and Nal included) on an expedition into the Deepest, Most Unknowable Dungeon. They explained that battles were less about straight confrontations and duels. It was more like a game of hide and seek.

The focus was on ambushing your opponent, avoiding their traps, and being able to run if needed. It certainly set things up for this series to be quite dark and dangerous. There is also a strangely sinister sense of humour running throughout which I thoroughly enjoyed. That said, the moment that Nal told Jean she was totally down for anal came completely out of the blue. Of course, it was explained shortly after. There were several ranks for adventurers and a subset for female adventurers, some of whom were more like the party wife. These were usually the weaker adventurers, but their function in a successful party was widely revered.

Anyhow, Jean then managed to add three more female adventurers to his party, which was sneered at by the more experienced adventurers. Even Katana, an experienced female adventurer known as the Sword Princess, felt like Jean’s party were asking for trouble. In a way, it makes sense for a fantasy world where strength is an incredibly important attribute. I also feel like this party will show the world that a group of girls (and Jean) can achieve the impossible and defeat the Deepest, Most Unknowable Dungeon. It’s going to be wild ride, and this was a fascinating beginning.
