Landlock (OVA 2) – Blue Eye!

What happened?

Once Agahali was inside their stolen plane, they raced away from Zanark’s mobile fortress as fast as they could. However, they were carrying too much weight and that made things difficult. Things inside the plane weren’t much better as Ansa attempted to stop Luda and Agahali from killing one another. There was a lot of emotions flying around and it wasn’t certain which way it would go. Before they could resolve anything they were caught up by several flying mechs. They attacked the plane, while Bork did his best to lose them, but it wasn’t good enough. One of the canopies flew open, forcing Luda and Agahali from the plane. Bork managed to land the plane on the water, but they skipped across the surface and into an island. When they were conscious once more, they found themselves in the prisons on Zanark’s fortress.

Agahali woke from a violent dream where she relived the moment she killed her father and how Zanark had played her. When she looked around, she was lying on a beach in the middle of the sea. Luda appeared moments later with a couple of fish. He told her that the island was tiny and that he couldn’t tell where they were. After climbing to the top, they looked out over the endless sea in every direction. They were completely lost, however, Zanark’s men hadn’t given up and soon found them. When Luda and Agahali tried to take cover, they peppered the island with bombs. However, Luda and Agahali came across a statue to the wind god which teleported them back to Zul.

However, Zanark’s mobile fortress was already there and he was missing. Bork sacrificed himself to help Ansa and Nosaku escape who then headed to the temple where they found Zanark, although he had changed. He had one blue eye and one red eye. His body seemed stronger too. That was when Luda and Agahali appeared. The wind goddess had brought them there for a reason, and it was about to be clear what that was. Zanark had summoned a terrible power in the form of a giant green headless creature that would do whatever he asked of it. However, the wind goddess then did something to Ansa, revealing that she too had a blue eye. Zanark’s powers were incomplete and started to turn against him. Agahali and Luda attacked, making sure that Zanark was finished, turning the green monster to dirt in the process.

What did you think?

Ironically, I was annoyed in the first OVA about how little emotion everyone showed about the horrible things they had done. However, the bizarre exchange in the plane was not the resolution I was looking for. Seriously, the dialogue was truly awful. One second Luda hated Agahali and wanted to kill her, then he couldn’t because she was his sister. He didn’t seem to care that she had been brainwashed and lied to her entire life. Anyhow, things just went off the rails from there.

I don’t think the story itself was completely obvious, but I think I may have a basic understanding. The reason the big green hand appeared in the first OVA was because Luda, Agahali, and Ansa were all together at Zul. However, Ansa’s blue eye was still hidden at that stage so it wouldn’t have been obvious that she was an integral part of it. Then, the wind goddess ensured that Luda and Agahali would end up on that one island where the shrine was so that it she could send them back to join Ansa and seal Zanark’s fate. However, had they not shown up, Zanark would have still died because the power was incomplete since he only had one blue eye and one red eye, and the power of the blue eye was halved because there were two.

So, ultimately, they could have done nothing and it would have ended the same way. Still, it wasn’t a terrible show. I wasn’t good, but I didn’t hate it that much. I liked Agahali and Ansa. The character designs were great, which is to be expected from Masamune Shirow. I just wish they had asked him to write the story too, and that they had then made it a proper series. It was too disjointed, there was too much going on and not enough time to handle it effectively.

  1. Yeah, I know what you mean about the faults in this one. It’s been on my list to review for so long that I’ve had to re-watch it twice since my original viewing, lol. (There’s enough about it that I liked, but it’s not one of my fav OVAs)

    • Agreed. It wasn’t exactly bad but the story had some issues. I was just happy to find something else with Masamune Shirow’s influence. And, I have no regrets about watching it.

    • Yeah, this series definitely had his influence all over it. I saw the cover and thought it looked like they were copying his style, but then found out he designed the characters, so here we are!
