What happened?

Teacher was relieved to discover that he was a very powerful sword, probably the most powerful in town thanks to his mana distribution skill. He may even get as strong as the legendary godswords. Garrus agreed to make some armour for Fran using the parts that Teacher had gathered in the forest. There would even be enough left over to pay for the armour, which Garrus agreed to buy. He would even throw in a sheath for Teacher.

Of course, that wouldn’t happen instantly, so they had some time to kill and some levelling up to do. Because of Fran’s low adventurer rank, the best quests they could take on were herb-gathering ones, which were incredibly boring. On one of these quests, they overheard some swords clinking. Was someone fighting? Fran rushed to help the three adventurers who were surrounded and outnumbered by goblins and hobgoblins. Fran killed them all and then learnt that a goblin stampede was likely.

More goblins attacked. Fran held them off while the others went for help. She didn’t need it though, killing all of the goblins in her path. She managed to track them back to their cave, which she soon discovered was a dungeon. Being so close to town, the Guild issued an urgent quest for all adventurers. Destroy the dungeon and kill everything inside. Fran was promoted so that she could join them and quickly rushed into the depths of the dungeon where she found something truly terrifying waiting for her.

What did you think?

This series is growing on me. I liked the first volume, but this was far more action-packed and we got to learn a bit about the history of the world. Again, I still don’t think there has been a compelling reason for Teacher to have been reincarnated from another world yet. This could have easily been a straight-up fantasy adventure, but worry about that is fairly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. I like that Fran is not some sort of timid flower, waiting to be saved. Her determination is a big factor in why I like this series.

So, one real criticism is that this volume ended on a huge cliffhanger. On one hand, it definitely makes me want to pick up the next volume to find out what happened. There’s no denying that it’s an effective marketing plan, however, I’ve seen too many cliffhangers fizzle out as soon as the next book starts. Either the cliffhanger becomes irrelevant or is easily overcome. I believe that if I have to wait to find out, it better blow my socks off. So, come on volume three, do your worst!
