Soul Eater (Volume 1) – Listen to the Beat of the Soul
What happened?
Maka’s mother created the last Death Scythe, the one that Shinigami is currently using. It’s also her father, but the less said about that the better. Maka has been partnered with Soul Eater, a demon weapon that takes the form of a scythe. They just got their ninety-ninth human soul and now just need a witch’s soul to complete the transformation. With Shinigami’s help, they track one down and attack. However, this witch is far too powerful… and hot… for Soul to be able to get the better of her. Maybe, he just join up with Blair instead!
Black☆Star follows the way of the assassin. He blends in with the surroundings, hides his aura, predicts his opponent’s moves, and then strikes. However, he’s a bit of a showoff and tends to announce himself before attacking. Not exactly how an assassin should act. His suffering partner is Tsubaki, a demon chain scythe. When she’s not cleaning up his mess or creating a smoke screen for them to escape, she’s disciplining Black☆Star for using his assassin skills to peep on her in the bath!
Death the Kid is the son of Shinigami. He’s quite strong and uses two demon weapons, although that’s mostly down to symmetry. You see likes everything to be symmetrical, which is a problem given his hairstyle and the fact that his demon weapons aren’t identical twins. They’re close, but there are some differences. Sometimes, the Kid will get so preoccupied with something he saw earlier and whether or not it was symmetrical that he will abandon Liz and Patty to fight without him.

What did you think?
This is my first foray into the Soul Eater world having never seen the anime. I have, however, seen all of Fire Force so far which is Atsushi Ohkubo’s other big series and really like it. So, I was excited to finally see what all the fuss was about with Soul Eater. First off, there is a lot of fan service, which is great. Then, we have some weapons that can take on a human form, also great. Finally, there are lots of supernatural monsters for them to fight. There are lots of pluses, so far.
So, why didn’t I instantly love this series? I enjoyed it, I just didn’t love it. The reason was the characters. There were several that I really enjoyed and will be looking forward to seeing again. They were Blair, Tsubaki, Patty and Liz. All of these characters were cool and mostly normal. Sadly, that’s only half of the cast so far, which means that I didn’t really care for the others. Black☆Star was so incredibly annoying that he instantly became my least favourite character and Soul isn’t far behind. The Kid had his moments, but Patty and Liz were far more entertaining without him. Finally, there’s Maka and I’m not sure how I feel about her so far. Obviously, there’s a lot more to read so all of these opinions could change.
