Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Episode 2) – Like A Boy

Cyberpunk Edgerunners Title

David has Ripperdoc put the implant in him. It’s military grade and will probably be too much for him, but David is adamant. With it, he’s able to move faster than the eye can see. Perfect for getting his revenge!

What happened?

David returns to his school once the implant is in place and strolls up to the bully, kicking him out of his seat. However, he’s confident that he can use his martial arts program to teach David another lesson. This time, David moves out of the way and lands a massive hit to the bully’s face. So much for attending that school anymore. The incident is brought to the attention of the bully’s father, a high-ranking suit who is interested to see that someone appears to be able to use the Sandevistan implant and wants him back in the school where they can monitor him.

However, David has no interest in even hearing out the principal. Later on the train, he sees a girl picking people’s data slots. Then, she tries to take his. He activates his implant in the blink of an eye and catches her in the act. Lucy drags him away and offers to work with him. She’ll cut him in 30-70. Since David has nothing else to do, he’s game and shows her just how useful his implant really is. After they’ve cleaned out the train, they leave and consider hitting another train, but blood gushes from David’s nose and then he passes out.

Lucy gets him an ambulance, but before long they are being held at gunpoint by the paramedic who plans on stealing David’s implant. Thanks to some fast thinking, Lucy escapes with David on the gurney. Once they’ve stopped moving, she takes him back to her apartment. There she shows him a BD simulation of the moon. They spend some time there, enjoying the experience, but then David is pulled out by a cyberpunk who wants his implant back!

What did you think?

Everything about the production of this show is incredible. The music perfectly fits the mood and the vibrant colours seem to pop against this dark and dingy world. You’d think it wouldn’t make sense, but it absolutely does. It never lets us forget that this world is awful. From Ripperdoc installing the implant to Lucy stealing data, and even the paramedic who was prepared to kill them over David’s implant. This world sucks.

I loved the way we were introduced to Lucy and how she was able to turn the table on David so easily. Of course, the scene where they were racing away from the ambulance on the gurney was amazing. It just fits perfectly with the aesthetic this series has developed. I feel like the revelation that someone is watching David now will come to be quite important, although it’s going to be one of those that we hear nothing of for a while.

I really can’t give this series enough praise at this stage. It is absolutely fascinating and I’m going to be sad when it’s over, no matter how it ends. When I first started watching anime, cyberpunk was massive with shows like AD Police, Genocyber, and Ghost in the Shell dominating the medium. I’d love to see a renaissance for shows like that, especially now that technology has moved on quite a bit from the nineteen-nineties.
