Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Episode 3) – Smooth Criminal
What happened?
Apparently, Lucy was stalling David until Maine and the rest of the gang arrived. Now that they were there, they want to know where David got the implant. It turns out that his mother was selling implants from people that had died in her ambulance. This one was a special case and no doubt cost Maine a lot of money. So, he was understandably upset to hear that someone else had it installed. When they discovered that David was Gloria’s son, they decided to see what he could do. He’ll have to pay off that debt somehow.
They need to steal the travel data from a driver and set things up so that they will have an opportunity. David will steal the data card and pass it to Dorio who will then copy it. They will then need to get the data card back to where they got from before the guy notices. Well, this isn’t going to be their day. He gets a call from his boss who needs him to drive him somewhere, but they still have the card. David takes it to the car where Lucy attempts to hack the data, but they are too late.
Their only option is to steal the car but they’ve not gone far before a bounty has been placed on it, attracting some street punks on motorcycles. David drives like a man possessed until they can get to the safe house. However, one of the street punks followed them and attacked. Lucy and David try to fight back, but he’s had too many augmentations. Luckily, Maine shows up and takes care of the punk. It was a rocky start, but David has now got a taste for this lifestyle and won’t want to give it up.

What did you think?
And my love affair with this series continues. There were parts of this episode that reminded me of the original Fast and Furious movie when it was a gritty car racing retelling of Point Break. Maine seems to fit the mentor role perfectly and will no doubt come to be very important to David. There’s obviously much more going on here that we aren’t seeing and Faraday was clearly introduced to tell us that. I have to wonder how much of this is down to Tanaka and his organisation testing David.
The car chase with the street punks on motorbikes also reminded me of Akira and frankly, any series that gets at least one Akira reference in is already onto a winner. Another thing that is quickly apparent is that the group already has a really interesting dynamic and that will no doubt lead to some conflict at some point. Pilar showing interest in Lucy is a problem for David, but then Rebecca also seems to like him. It could get complicated.
Anyhow, it’s been a while since I’ve genuinely been this excited to keep watching a series. Usually, it’ll grab me after a few episodes anyhow, but I feel like I need to binge the whole thing right now. I don’t even mind if I have to rewatch it to write up the reviews. This series is on another level entirely. Give me more!
