What happened?

Allen and his guards take care of the bandits on the main floor, however, the one that Michio sold is still running around on the upper floor. Michio follows him to a darkened room and realises that he could try out one of the spells that came with his various job roles. He decides to try Equivalent Exchange! It kills the bandit and leaves Michio barely able to lift his head. Roxanne finds him on the floor. Allen pays him for his help and then they leave.

Michio desperately needs to restore his MP so goes to the Labyrinth although warping there makes things worse. However, after he’s slain a few monsters he feels like himself again. Not only that, he’s now acquired the job of mage and can use spells which he gleefully tries out on the remaining monsters. He can now attack multiple targets at once. Surprisingly, they find themselves standing in front of the door to the second floor boss. Well, they might as well take it on too.

After leaving the dungeon, Michio decides he should get a staff to use his magic to its full potential. However, they will need to travel to another town to find a good one. Luckily, a mage at the guild house is doing transportation spells for a price. Michio asks her to take him to Imperial City and then Quratar. Since he’s been there, he can now teleport himself and Roxanne there. In Quratar they find the knights have put a toll on the local labyrinth. Then, Roxanne tells him he can bypass it by paying once to get inside.

What did you think?

So, that was a bit of a ballsy move from Michio. Testing out a spell that might have killed him had he been wrong about the bandit’s level! It was good to see that it actually impacted him and forced him to head to the labyrinth to recover. Of course, it paid off giving him the ability to cast spells. I liked the way he worked out how they work too by testing different words and trying out different formats. It reminds me of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation in the way he’s breaking all the established understandings of the world.

One thing that I thought was kind of dumb was how Michio used the mage to take him to two cities so he could do it himself, but he didn’t instantly realise he could do the same with the Quratar labyrinth. I’m not sure what they were thinking there, but my only guess is that they wanted to give Roxanne something to do. It’s a silly idea too, however, as she’s more than proved her worth to Michio.

Still no news about how Roxanne became a slave, but hopefully, something will come up when they move to Quratar. Some backstory would very much be appreciated about now.
