Citrus (Episode 5) – under lover

What happened?

Momokino and Yuzu are still fighting over Mei and it’s starting to annoy her. One particular instance causes Mei to send them away, demanding that they eat lunch together and leave her alone. They continue their fight in the cafeteria until Harumi finds them with some news. She has four tickets to the amusement park and figures they can all go. They could even invite the president. Scarily, Yuzu and Momokino both jump up with excitement.

When Yuzu gets home, she finds a letter from Mei’s father in the mail and takes it to her, offering to open it for her since she’s in the bath. Mei jumps out and races to stop her. Of course, Yuzu had no intentions of opening it but was shocked by Mei’s reaction. Later that night, Yuzu asks Mei if she would come with her to visit her father. She even suggests that their mother would like it. After a cramped train ride, some crepes, and a surprise appearance from Momokino, they arrived at Yuzu’s father’s shrine. Mei didn’t realise he had passed.

Yuzu told her father all about Mei and how she hoped to be able to show him that she could look after her. Mei offered a prayer for him too and then asked Yuzu if she would ever be able to be close with her father again. Yuzu was sure that she could, although she also realised that Mei needed the love of her family first and not a romantic kind. That was devastating to her, but Yuzu knew what she had to do. Then, one evening, someone opened the apartment door and came in. It was Mei’s father!

What did you think?

I still remember the moment that Yuzu stopped in front of her father’s shrine in the manga, which surprisingly didn’t make it any easier while watching the anime. I think my reaction was similar to Mei’s. It certainly revealed a lot about Yuzu and who she is. She’s a wonderful character so seeing her upset when she realised that she needed to step back and support Mei rather than allowing her desires to get the better of her. That said, the moment on the train was great. It was nice seeing Yuzu tease Mei for once.

This is where we see Momokino start to calm down a little. She’s still annoying and I can’t imagine how she managed to track them down, but the way Mei addressed her was a wake-up call to her, even if it was a little harsh. Of course, she was rightly angry that Momokino was lying about their relationship to scare Yuzu away. This series starts fairly slowly, but it digs its nails in and pulls you in. This brings us to the two-thirds mark of volume two. At this rate, it looks like only four volumes were adapted, which is criminal.
