Citrus (Episode 2) – one’s first love

What happened?

Yuzu hasn’t been able to sleep lately, spending all her time thinking about the kiss. In fact, she’s so tired, she stumbled into a fountain while shopping with her mother and Mei. Unfortunately, she grabbed Mei and pulled her in too. They hurried home to get out of their wet clothes and somehow ended up in the bath together. Yuzu went to leave, but Mei stood up and pushed her against the wall. Then, she licked Yuzu’s neck. Yuzu pushed her away and asked what she thought she was doing. Mei said that the way Yuzu had been looking at her made her think she wanted it.

The next day, Yuzu asked Harumi why there appeared to be so many couples at an all-girl school. Harumi told her that most of the girls were already engaged and this was their only chance to experiment. Yuzu wondered if that was how Mei thought of her. Harumi froze when they got to school as the Chairman was standing at the gates. There was no way Yuzu was going to get past him without causing an incident. Yuzu wasn’t worried and introduced herself to her new grandfather.

He was appalled by her behaviour and dress and told her to go home. He then took it out on Mei for allowing such a thing to happen at the school. Yuzu stormed off and then snuck into the school with Harumi. On their way to class, they overheard the teacher Mei is engaged to talking to another girl on his phone about all the money he was going to get when he married her. Yuzu tried to warn Mei about him, but she dismissed her concerns. Of course, that’s not going to fly with Yuzu so she hijacked the class announcements to tell everyone about the teacher!

What did you think?

So, episode two is still dealing with things that happened in volume one of the manga which is fine. I think we’ll likely see three episodes from volume one. The anime definitely makes Mei’s advances seem far more creepy than the manga does. Now, I’m not saying she’s not being selfish or forceful, she is, but the anime makes it look quite sinister, especially with the shadows and music choices. I can see why people would be getting quite frustrated with the series at this point because Mei really is showing the darker side of her personality.

It’s nice that it’s already giving us hints as to why Mei is like this and how Yuzu is the only one that is able to see her suffering. I think that is part of what draws Mei to Yuzu. She’s spent so long perfecting the ideal student persona that everyone admires when in reality, it’s all a front to protect herself from showing how she really feels about things. Of course, Yuzu is the opposite and uses the Gyaru front to show who she really is. It’s an interesting parallel.
