Citrus (Volume 6) – The Best Laid Plans…

So, Yuzu and Mei are now dating, but they’re not actually “dating” which is something Yuzu wants to fix. If only she had a guide to follow… No, no. Don’t make one and put Mei’s name on it. No good can come of this!
Citrus (Volume 6) – The Best Laid Plans…
What happened?
Yuzu is determined to make it work, but every time she tries to talk to Mei, she gets a little flustered and runs away. Her big idea to overcome this obstacle was to create a guide on how she was going to do it with clippings from manga, magazines, and other sources of information. Of course, it would be terrible if Mei found the book titled “The Fall in Love with Mei and Live Happily Ever After Plan”… There are probably loads of places to hide it. It’s not like they share a room or anything…
Mei finds the book, however, instead of worrying about it, she agrees to go on a date with Yuzu and then shows up with the book so that she can ensure the date goes exactly to plan. That leaves Yuzu feeling weird and after a while, she gets so fed up with Mei following the book word for word that she throws it away. Mei hurries to retrieve it and reveals that without it she would be lost. Yuzu reassures her that they don’t need the guide as she leans in and gives Mei a hug.

It’s been almost a year since they started living together so Yuzu wants to get Mei a gift. She decides on matching rings. To pay for them, she gets a part-time job but since the school won’t allow it, she gets one near her old home. Of course, she’s lying to Mei about where she’s going, claiming to be studying with Harumi. When she has enough money, Yuzu went to buy the rings, although she saw Matsuri who tried and failed to convince her otherwise.
On the way home, Yuzu bumped into two of her old friends and caught up. While they were chatting, they saw two girls kissing and her friends reacted negatively to it. That got Yuzu all worked up and by the time she got home she was crying and didn’t want to give Mei the rings. She also failed the test and had to study for the retake. In the library, she bumped into Mei who wanted to know why she was so sad. After telling her, Mei wrote down some words that Yuzu had said to her previously. Yuzu realised that she needed to be happy and not worry about what others might think. She later gave Mei the ring and she loved it.

What did you think?
Well, that was all pretty intense, but at the same time really endearing. Seeing Yuzu go through all these emotions was incredible. I think everyone should be able to relate to that, regardless of their sexual preference. These emotions are not exclusive to girls falling for girls and that shows that having any sort of objection to two people loving one another is absurd.
I also loved how Mei was completely dependent on the guide that Yuzu created. She was so worried about how it might go and how little she knew about dating that it took over. I think that’ll make any progress she makes in this area that much more satisfying. There will be a time when they are more comfortable with one another and that will feel like a huge development, which it will be.
This episode had a good bit of comedy in it too, which was quite unexpected. The guidebook was brilliant. I loved when Mei found it and showed Yuzu. Yuzu’s reaction was just as good. Then, how the book took over the date to the point that Yuzu threw it as far as she could was inspired. I really enjoyed this volume and the lack of a dramatic intervention from someone other than Yuzu and Mei was appreciated. These two will create more than enough on their own without forcing more on them.
